Burning major oil
Burning major oil
I just picked up an 87 N/A RX7 for cheap. I got it running and it drives o.k. but oil is getting on to the spark plugs and fouling them. IT was billowing out white smoke at first than calmed down
It revs high and pulls down the road o.k., so I didn't figure it was totally shot. Anybody have a clue??

Not only that but it sounds like the coolant seals are shot...take the cap off and see if bubbles the coolant when you start the car up and let it run...also check to see if it's overheating.
87 n/a uses a mechanical pump with a mechanical linkage for the OMP. If I remember correctly, the linkage goes from the throttle body down to the OMP. Metering is proportional to your throttle position. The OMP should spring back when you release the throttle. If the mechanical rod is hung up or rubbing up against something or if the springs on the omp is not working correctly you will be dumping a ton of oil in the motor. The omp will be operating at wide open settings even when you are at idle. This happened to me when I used to own an 87 and my omp was hung up, I was consuming about a quart of oil for every tank or two of gas. The problem when away once I corrected the issue. It a very simple check, just look for a rod that goes from the top of the engine down to the bottom and play with your throttle or have someone step on the gas pedal a couple of times while you observe the rod movement. If you don't see any, then your rod could be hung up.

I'll check that stuff later today, too damn hot now! Tx sucks in the summer Would that rod being stuck cause your plugs to foul out ?

sounds like bad oil control ring bungies... time for a rebuild... when you let the gas off after accelerating in 3/4th gear does smoke come bellowing out the tailpipe?

If it's white smoke, it's probably your coolant seals being shot. Test it to see if they are. Search the 2nd Generation section to find out how.
