Question Automatic wont reverse nor shift gears

I have an 87 automatic GXL and recently the car wont reverse. the last time i drove it comming home from work it wont even shift gear. It was stuck on 40mph and then about 30secs later 50mph and wont go any further even if i press on the gas the rpm would raised but the speed stays at 50mph. what the heck is going on with my fc?? i mean obviously the transmission is going bad, but is there anyway to fix this problem? or do i have to replace it with a better tranny???

I also have one that I retired but It seems to be a pretty general opinion that the auto trans in mazdas ( no offense ) is a piece of **** . That is about the best info I ever got about one . Most guys just seem to avoid them and probably are very expensive to fix JMO
