Automatic Question

I have a 93 RX-7. I was recently looking at Power FC's and at fluidyne radiators. both say that they are for manual transmissions only. is this true? Can i still use the power FC on my auto. I assume the radiator is stated like that simply because of mounting or something. Can someone also tell me if the automatic tranny is vacuum or electronic controlled. Thanks.

The Auto Trans is electronically controlled by its own ecu - however it requires data from the main ECU that is NOT avaliable from the PFC, for proper Auto function the PFC can be piggy backed w/ the stock ECU. I think Chuck at Rotary Extreme uses this set up on his FD.

The Fluidyne Rad is marked manual trans only because it does not have a Trans-Cooler/heat exchanger mounted in the bottom tank - on the the Fluidyne site they reccomend adding one of their multipass trans-cooler units to compensate.

If you want a radiator get one from awrracing.com. same radiator he makes for mazdaspeed, but for the automatic. Max is correct, 5 speed radiator doesn't allow for the trans cooler. Trans is electrically controlled. PFC will work, without being piggybacked. Lose some trans functions, worth it in my book. You WILL probably blow the tranny if you make much power over stock.

I think the two main ones are the hold function and the ignition retard during shifts (makes for rough shifts). I used to know more, but I've forgotten. I suggest you take a look at a shop manual, and you can figure out what you will lose by seeing what things are communicated between stock ecu and trans ecu. As far as how much you can push it...every car is different. I can only relate my story. 2-3 years ago I paid $3K+ to have an Apex PFC, Apex intake, and Greddy SMIC on my car. It dyno'd @ 260 to the wheels. About 2 hours later the tranny blew up. What you must remember is that you have the same tranny as a MPV minivan. It wasn't the TC. It was 3rd gear. replaced with a kit from levelten.com. BTW the labor alone was $3K+. If you have the cash I say go for it.

How many miles were on your tranny when you blew 3rd? Does anyone else have any auto tranny stuff to tell me.

I did determine that the only thing lost by the power FC is the hold function. And does any one know where I can get a nice tranny cooler?

My transmission had 53K on it when it blew, and like I said, within a couple of hours after the power mods. The stock tranny cooler is already tough to beat. You can also try a mocal, B&M, etc. Get ready to fork out the bucks. I bought 2 coolers and lines, but have yet to install it. You lose more than the hold function. Try www.iluvmyrx7.com to read online service manual. It's not bad tho'. I've had mine now for over a year.
