Hey Guys:

I have a 90 Convertible that I am planning on doing some engine work on. The less the better.........so I have a question for everyone. I am burning oil at an alarming rate..........more than a normal 13b does when running correctly. I am carrying between 50-80 lbs of oil pressure when I am running the car.....however, I get a big ploom of white smoke when the engine revs above 3500 or so , until the automatic transmission shifts and the RPM's drop. I have not checked the compression, as I know that this will be a tell tale sign of what needs to happen with respect to a re-build....or replacing components.
I am wondering if anyone out there has had a similar occurance and what the solution / outcome of the situation turned out to be. I am planning on buying a re-build kit from Atkins or Rotary Aviation and re-building the motor at this point. However, if there is an easier and cheaper solution to the problem, I am all ears.

have you obtained an actual consumption figure/guesstimate yet? i'll assume that this is not just a bad port job, so try running some Marvel Mystery Oil in your oil. it's a long shot, but maybe your oil O-ring are sticking/stuck. if that doesn't work, a rebuild sounds in order.

 

White smoke = coolant leak. Blue smoke = oil leak.

 

Well.........I've tried the Marvel Mystery Oil........we shall see how it works.

Ask Zavier from RX7store, he has a mosquito sprayer too.

 

Eating Oil fast.. most likely the Oil control Rings are goners.
Only bandaid you can use.. Run thicker Oil. That will help some. It will at least cut down on the smoke a little... But if it smokes that bad.. it may just be time to take it apart.

Try 1 container of Motor Honey in it when you are at the 4 Quart stage... I think Motor Honey is .5 quart or so.. It will thicken the oil enough in a lightly smoking engine to somewhat stop it.

 

Well......the Marvel's didn't seem to make a difference in the smoke department and really made the problem a bit worse. So, I am going to start the teardown this weekend. I appreciate everyones advice......however, I don't want to band-aid the problem.......I want to eliminate it and I think the only way to do this is to rebuild the engine.

Sorry to hear that...
From what Ive seen.. MMO will just free up a Lot of the carbon that may be sealing things.... Also.. it will thin the oil somewhat.. causing it to slip past the oil control seals some.. Hence the Motor honey suggestion.

On the good side.. it prolly cleaned your oil system somewhat.. to make your job while rebuilding it easier..

This is my first Rotary Engine rebuild......but I've tried to gain as much knowledge as I can by reading anything I can get my hands on. Better to be over prepared than **** out of luck. I am not looking forward to spending time in my sweltering garage though........it has been REAL hot and muggy in Florida for the past couple of weeks.
