Air duct missing? Tape used?

Mazda RX-7 FD '96

As you can see in the picture, there's tape pasted all over next to where the air duct should sit... Now, I'm not saying I'm a professional mechanic but I don't think that's normal... Anyone an idea why it was put there? Also take note that I have boost problems, could this be the reason why?

Thanks.

That has nothing to do with your boost problems. What you have pictured there is actually an upgrade of sorts. That top port is so air can go into the factory airbox by way of that little cover that normally goes on there. With the factory airbox removed, air is free to go wherever it wants. With that port covered, MORE air is going THROUGH the stock intercooler. So what you have there is good and fine. Don't mess with it.

Stock airbox is still on tho, I just found it like that when I removed the cover, but thanks! Will keep it like that. Damn I feel stupid hahaha

Whoa whoa hold up..... if you still have the stock air box AND that cover thing that goes over the intercooler then you need to remove that tape. If you're just using the stock air box without that cover thing, then get one............. and remove that tape when you install it. You know what cover thing im talking about? It sits just forward of the intercooler over top.

I know what you mean with the cover thing, does it affect any performance when there's both the tape, stock airbox and the cover?

yes, that tape is restricting air flow to the air box. the port on the duct that tape is the covering is the port where air flows into the stock air box. its literally being blocked by that. its choking your turbos of air. if you want to keep the tape, remove the cover so your turbos can suck in air more efficiently.
