Adding a catalytic converter

My 88 vert is currently running a straight pipe exhaust and can't pass emissions and I want it to quiet down. I was thinking about installing a catalytic converter from magnaflow to fix the problem. Do I have to purchase a downpipe also or a header to make the changes?

I would, but I don't have the $$ for it now. What are my other options?

a don't pass smog
b spend even more on stock cats

**** costs money dude deal with it. the amount you would spend to have a shop weld one in along with the cost of the cat would cost half the amount of the pipe
