88 vert stuck in 1st gear

88 vert stuck in 1st gear
Whuts up yall.
I have an 88 rx-7 vert, its stuck in first gear, but appears to be in neutral, the car runs with the clutch in and is still in first when its on. i just put a new clutch kit in the car. Any idea's y its stuck in first
And when the car runs it backfires alot until idling, and when its first started it wont idle by itself until it gets kind of warm....
any help is appreciated.
