2nd gen trans in GSL-SE?
Ok I have a question.
Is a 2nd gen trans a drop in for a gls-se? My throwout or input shaft bearing is making a hell of a lot of noise. Im not sure which it is. I think I will be getting a new clutch and throwout bearing to try to cure this. I remember my 12A blew a trans input shaft bearing and the noise was about the same (rattles until you push in the clutch..) Anyway, Im assuming if its not the throwout bearing then my trans is on the way out. If so, It will be much easier to find a 2nd gen trans.
Anyone know for sure? Does the trans tunnel have to be modified? will the 2nd gen trans let me use the short shift kits for the 2nd gen? Thanks

2nd-gen N/A trans: not a "drop in" but it is a bolt-in-and-go if you count changing the tail housing as "bolting in". (It's only eight more bolts once you have the trans out on the floor) The FC trans will have taller 1st to 3rd gears and a MUCH taller 5th, though. It's otherwise the same exact unit.
"Short throw" shifters are interchangeable for all '81-92 N/A models, by the way. At least, the shifter levers are - we put a '83 shifter in a '88 FC.
2nd-gen turbo trans: Not a bolt-in. Doesn't need floor hackery but it does need a custom driveshaft / different flywheel / altered trans mount / either altered shifter or creative massaging of the shifter hole. Has been documented several times on this and other forums.
