13B Cold Start Issue

I have recently purchased an '84 GSL-SE with 105,000 miles. Car runs fine except for one thing. After it has been sitting for a few days or more, it is reluctant to start and there is an odor of gasoline.

I have found that holding the throttle to the floor and cranking the engine will get it started eventually, but when it does fire, there is a LARGE cloud of gray smoke out of the exhaust.

My shade tree mechanic instincts tell me, it is "flooded", if such a thing is possible with fuel injection, and that the cloud of smoke is unburned gasoline being pushed out the exhaust. It clears after a minute or so, and after that, there is no smoke from the exhaust.

It seems to me that the f.i. system is providing too much fuel to the engine upon cold start-up. But why that would be or how to cure it? I have no clue.

I'm sure this issue has been discussed here previously, but I am new to your community and would appreciate any insight/feedback.

Thanks.
