**Help Engines Dies if Accelerator not held in

when i fire my 88 gxl up,...once it decides to go ahead and start up after cranking, if i take my foot off the accelerator for one second, engine dies, engine shakes all over, and if i attempt to put it in any gear, engine also just cuts off, any suggestions?

Check for air leak between airflow meter (filter box) and throttle body. If there is a crack in that large hose the air bypasses the airflow meter. If the airflow meter does not see enough air flow it kills the fuel pump. If you hold the throttle open the amount leaking in becomes so small in comparison to the amount going through the airflow meter that it doesn't matter as much.

Maybe only running on one rotor? U may have to get someone to help, but try to keep it running and pull plug wires (1 then 2) individually to check this. If there's no change in engine speed when u pull a wire, there ya go.

Did it just start doing this out of the blue or did you recently add some mods or do some work to the motor?
It would sound to me like you have a blown rotor, but are you seeing any type of smoke come from the exhaust when you try to start it up?

yea smoke for a minute or two...it just started doing it...ive only had it a week..everytime i started it, i just had to floor the gas and crank for about 4 seconds and it would start fine, except if was wet (raining/car wash). the day it started doing it...i started the car, drove across a parking lot, cut it off, went in a store, come back out, and it wouldnt start......and if i have blown a rotor...that means i gotta buy a new engine?

and the engine only shakes badly if you let off the gas when it cuts itself off

Yeah, I have gone through this before also!! I had about the same problems.....high idle, smoke, stalling as soon as I started the car up everytime! I couldn't move mine either, because as soon as I tried to start it up, it would shut off! Finally after checking everything imaginable, I did a compression test on it and well.......I found out that I did have a blown rotor!! I'm not saying that this is your problem too, but I am saying that, in your situation a compression test would never hurt!!
