i have a 90 vert and the damn auto is dieing on me
i am ready to do a 5 speed conversion i will have acess to a lift and all the tools i will need, these r the thing i have found doing a search so far:
- tranny
-Starter
-Driveshaft
-Halfshafts
-clutch slave cylinder
-clutch master cylinder
-Pedal assembly
-flywheel
-clutch
is there anything i am missing????
i was thinking about just buying a junk car between 89-92, would this be a cheaper way to do this???'
and also for all of you who have done this i have 4 more ?'s for you:
1: what about the interior?? will i need any of that becides the shift boot (and all the little things that go around it)
2: for all you people who have done this did u have any problems so far with it and how many miles have u put on your car since you have done it?
3: cruise control: will it still work??? will i have to do anything to get it to work
4 : because my car is a vert will i have to get a junk car that is a vert also?
any and all info will be apreaciated
thanks

You don't need the halfshafts.
Cruise should not be affected.
The trans mount is different, I believe.
You may have to bolt in (or weld in) one from the 5 speed.
Vert and coupe parts are the same for this swap.
Good Luck!!

the auto mount sits further back. you will have to either weld the 5-speed mounting tabs onto the body of your car or modify the auto crossmember to work with the 5-speed(the easier way). the latter still will require minor welding but much easier.

This is a simple swap.
Reliability? As good as your assembly.
The only questionable area is how well you weld the trans mount to your chassis.
Everything else just duplicates the factory install.

You don't have to weld if you don't really want to. You could simply use angle iron (as hypntyz does) to go from the old AT mount to the 5speed, this holds quite sturdy. Just ask hypntyz7, or check out his site at http://hypntyz.rx7life.com. I've done it myself, with the angle iron drilled and cut to length for me by hyp.

I have had no problems with reliability. I had 170k on my auto tranny when it packed up so I went 5 speed I have put about 27k on it so far. No issues at all. Tranny mount is not near the issue it sounds to be, its a cake walk. I suggest using the rubber shock/strut big rubber things on either side of your bolts to cut vibration a bit. I liked the feel much better after I added the rubbber jobbers.

You need a shifter and the boot. You will also need a clutch line, preferably stainless steel braided. There is also a little bit of rewiring you need to do.

Speedo cable is longer on the auto so it is not a problem. If you went from manual to auto you would need to swap the cable, and also have your head checked.

Im not sure on the rewiring. I had KD Rotary do my swap before I realized that it is possible to do it yourself. Dave at KDR explained to me what had to be rewired but I forget. But there is a couple wires on the auto that will not be used on the manual and a couple need to be relinked to different colored wires. If all of the wires were the same color on the manual as on the auto it would probably be just a plug-and-play opperation but I don't think that is the case. A good look over the factory service manual should answer all of your wiring questions.

The ports and engines are identical as are the rev limiters(91/9200). The 7krpm redline on AT 89-91s is a visual warning only. The tranny does not like to spin that fast, so they dont want you going any farther, even though the engine could definitely handle it. But, if you wanted to, and powershifted it, it would rev out just like a 5sp. IT would feel so damn slow in doing so because teh AT is geared shitty and probably slips if it is original
