Thumbs up faded side trim fix

I've seen lots of 1st gens with their side mouldings removed, and they look great, very clean. I, however, like the way the trim ties together the bumpers with the rest of the car. Also, the strips do provide some good protection against door dings.

But, the moulding looks like **** when it gets faded and chalky. So.........I tried this stuff with great results:

Forever BLACK™ Bumper & Trim Reconditioner restores faded black bumpers and trim to a like new condition.

No masking or tape required since the Bumper & Trim Reconditioner will only adhere to porous plastic, rubber, and vinyl.

It's actually a dye, (reminds me of shoe polish), and comes equipped with an applicator which makes it easy to use. Forget about rubber treatment, Armorall and the like. That junk looks ok for maybe one day then washes off. On the other hand, this stuff lasts, (10 months on my car now and it still looks good).

BTW, if you are considering buying new side trim from the dealer, (or from Mazdatrix) plan on shelling out about six hundred snaps.

Lot of places to buy it online, I don't remember where I bought it. (Do google search for Forever Black).

1st gens "Forever"

I seem to recall the VictoriaBritish catalog having the trim for fairly cheap. Upkeep though, I think you may have something.

Nah, anywhere you go, the new trim is expensive. I'm going to go look for that stuff and try it out.

WHat if I pull the moulding for a paint jobber. How to reattach? 3M double sticky tape?

Use some 3M adhesive in the aerosol can.

I know they have many versions of it. I think I've played with 70 and 90. What type did you use? Did it mess up your paint?

My brother bought me this stuff for my birthday and I tried it yesterday. That dye is BLACK! If you have any imperfections in your paint, the dye will run and get into them. I found it difficult to get rid of it completely.

I think I need another coat, but it seems to do the job well. Just be quick to wash off any dye that runs down the paint.

Use the 3M thin double sided tape, 1/4-3/16" wide. It's similar to what the factory uses. The 70 and 90 spray adhesive works well for interior fabrics.

I never even looked at the original date, hope Pele has his car painted by now, lol. At least members are searching.

Fwiw, when I redo the trim, I mask off the paint, then use 0000 steel wool and mineral spirits/paint thinner to take off the dead layer of rubber. After a good soapy cleaning and rinse/dry, I apply a couple coats of Mother's Back to Black.

hmmm

Sooo, has anyone used this miracle stuff to say die a maroon dash black? The maroon interior in my 85GSL-SE is kinda disco stu era and I'd like to clean it up and just make it all black and maybe some tan trim or something like that.

Anyway, just wondering how it would work on a maroon dash???? and other maroon trim pieces.

If you look around your car a little more, and maybe even take about 15 steps back and look at the entire car, you'll notice that the maroon dash isn't the limit to the "disco stu" look. I think your solution is to embrace the disco look that we all love so much. *humming the bee gee's*

I agree. Mazda made it that way, respect it! I didn't like my sunbeam silver, brown interior series 2. But I learned to like it, because thats the way Mazda intended it!

You don't dye the dash.

You pull it out then paint it using SEM paints . I changed the color on my SE from the dark (Chocolate Brown) to tan.
