The 3rd digit has nothing to do with what engine is in it... *all* RX-7s should start with JM1. IIRC it means assembled in Japan, by Mazda, and the 1 is the assembly plant code. We all know what FC33 means The 8th digit, "1", is the engine code. (The 10th digit is the year - H is 1987) The 9th digit is a checksum, so they can tell if a VIN is fake or not, and the 11th through 17th are the car's number.

Back to the 8th digit... For 2nd-gen models, the 1 means non turbo. T2s should have a "2" in that position. Sorry. Mazda gives the first engine available in the body the "1" - for 1st gens a 1 means 12A, for 2nd gens the 1 means N/A 13B, for 3rd gens... all 3rd gens have a 1 there.

http://mrmazda.members.atlantic.net/mdictionary.html

Like he said, for the '86-'91 this is the breakdown...
JM1 = Mazda
FC = 2nd Gen
33 = Body Style (35 = Convertible)
1 = Non-Turbo Engine (2 = Turbo)
4 = Check Digit
H = 1987 Model Year
0 = Hiroshima Plant
546531 = Serial Number, first 1987 serial number for this series was 500001

That 1=non-turbo, 2=turbo convention only holds true for US-spec cars!&nbsp I've seen Canada vehicles with really screwed up VINs that don't adhere to this rule...

Sorry NZ, I believe all your VINs go like "FC3S-xxxxxxxx", or something close to that.&nbsp These VIN dechipers ar only for North American vehicles.

Only by the serial number:

100001-700000 is series 4 (production dates-8/85 through 12/88)
700001-950000 is series 5 (production dates- 12/88 through 7/91)

Note the production dates, most other manufactures use 6/XX or 8/XX as the cut off point, Mazda because they also built the 323/Protege/Famila in the same plant had weird cut off dates

334 is Coupe Turbo w/o auto shoulder belt.

The series 5 cars had slightly different numbering:

331= Coupe w/ auto shoulder belt
332= Turbo coupe w/ auto shoulder belt
333= Coupe w/o auto shoulder belt
334= Turbo Coupe w/o auto shoulder belt
351= Convertible w/o airbag
352= Convertible w/ airbag
