Thumbs down Gas Mileage Blows

Do all RX 7's get crappy gas mileage? I get like 10 to 15 mpg. I figured a 1.3 liter would get better. If I get a turbo controller, I should be able is disarm the turbos and get better gas mileage right?

Mine ran in the 15s until I got my PFC. Now my street ported engine gets 17s in Houston traffic.

I get close to 22 but I drive it every day so don't "play" with it as much as you might think. At the track I'd guess half that.

Well you shouldn't be getting that bad. You may need to replace the O2 sensor and do the tune-up stuff...

The power FC definitely gets better gas mileage though, most RXs that got 280 miles to the tank are getting 300 or more after I installed their FCs.

Also a boost controller isn't going to turn off your turbos or fix your gas mileage. Try not keeping your right foot planted to the floor and that will probably help!

There's a good thread about some gas mileage people are seeing in their FD's:

https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=19882

Basically, 11-16mpg seems about the norm.

I get 17-19 just driving around normally, some freeway, some city. I noticed a 2mpg increase after getting new plugs and fixing some vacuum leaks (thank you Mazdatrix). It REALLY depends on how/where you drive though. If you're stuck in traffic a lot, well, you get 0mpg at idle. And if you like to play, I think i've managed an entire tank at 9

Hahahahaha ... I'm sorry, what did you just say? OK, since you're a fellow Texan I'll let it slide, but do some research buddy! Oh and from a technical point of view (and not high performance point of view), turbos improve gas mileage.

And yes, FDs get bad gas mileage, especially in city driving. It takes a lot to get the rotors turning. It's not quite like a piston motor where once things start moving they're esentially mechanically forced to keep moving, it's more like a windmill that takes a lot of wind to start moving adequately and then takes consistent wind to keep it turning. You are asking the windmill to start fast enough to roll you through traffic, which is a lot to ask of a motor design like that, so it takes a huge gust of wind (gas) to get the windmill up to speed.

care to elaborate on that?

well I get around 13....but if it's on the highway constant 70mph I get like 30! If you dont' boost it will be ok. But what's the point?? you didn't get the RX-7 to drive like a granny.

Not tonight, dear. I've been reading and researching too much for school and my head is spinning because I exercise too much and can't sleep. It involves too much theory and that part of my brain and tolerance for dispute isn't turned on tonight. Note that I said from a technical point of view and not a high performance point of view (where you're trying to use a turbo for power) ... maybe "gas mileage" isn't the best term ... try "fuel economy" ... they can have different meanings. A properly-tuned turbo can be used to generate the same level of power on the same motor as NA means at less expensive of gas ... that's "economy". Additionally, a smaller motor can use a low-boost turbo to generate the same power of a marginally larger motor and maintain better fuel economy, unless under severe city conditions where the turbo is useless.

oh in that sense, yeah I agree....
thought we were keeping the motor size constant in the comparison but keeping the horsepower variable constant then yes that is very true...

Well you might change your fuel filter. It made a difference for me. When I was broke a few months ago I knew I had to be careful and I got 320 miles to a tank of gas! Know I'm not worried about money and I get around 200miles. It all depends how you drive. I swear when I am running my car hard I can see the gas gauge move, maby not but I think it does .

My R1 gets about 15 mpg-city as well, and it is stock. I am hoping that will improve as I fix/replace old pieces.
For goot gas milage I got a Motorcycle (43 mpg city) but it is a 4 cylinder so I get a little HP out of it as well.
Car = play time/ I-don't-care-about-gas time
Motorcycle = fun time but economical/ I-have-spent-too-much-on-gass-this-week time
It just sucks when it rains though, neither are very good in bad weather...(oops)

Talking around that range

ok ok im around that range of 13 and 15 mpg. If your right i work in downtown and it's stop and go all the way. I haven't got a chance to do a road trip. And this is for the guy that said you cant disable your turbo, APEX ---boost controler did. 300zx TT-- A mode was 8 pounds and B mode was 13 pounds or you could disable..
