Is removing the AC legal?

I dont use it anyways and it would free up a lot of room. Are there any laws saying i can't remove it?? Or a certain way i have to discharge the freon??

Take it out if you want, but the freon should be properly evacuated from the system first. And that doesn't mean venting it to atmosphere.

Are you talking about the stuff that drips onto the ground from a parked car that was just using his/her ac?

If so.. thats just condensation from the ac unit.. (read: water) and isn't freon.

no, not the condensation from the ac lines. there are different types of freon(don't know all the names but they all seem to have RJ in 'em or something) and i believe there is one that's heavier than O2 and just stays on the ground

Unless your car has a sticker under the hood that says it's been retrofitted with R-134a, DO NOT, under ANY circumstance vent it to the atmosphere. If that sticker isn't there, your car still has R-12 in it, which is very hazardous and caustic to the atmosphere. If you really want to do it right you should be able to find a shop that will evacuate the system for you and you might even be able to sell them the R-12.

well the guy i bought the car from told me he had put R-134a into it. Of course he might have been lying because there is no sticker...is there anyway i can check which it has in there??

You could take it to a local shop and have them check it, but that's about your only option. Even if it is 134a, I would still take it to a shop to have it evacuated. I was hit in the face with less than an ounce of the stuff and it was horrible. My lips, chin and nose were numb for an hour and a half.
They should still pay you something for it if it is 134a or see if you can make an even trade by having them evac it for you.

Yep, down south if you take it to the shop they'll just bleed it off and then charge you for bein' stupid. So i guess it all goes if you hug trees or not.

I don't think they do that in Dallas, OSHA or someone would be on their a$$ I almost got fined once for not having a helmet on a construction site that didn't even have any walls up... besides i don't think it's "tree hugging" when you're preventing the ozone from doing a disapearing act. So i might want to get it professionally done...

Yeah down there in Texas they are some asses about emmisions and things like that. Take it to a shop and see if they'll remove the freon for free, or use a pencil, but i didnt say that .

the proper way to release the freon take a screw driver stick it the fill valve and get back or losen the main line tie a rope and pull (note) you should be 5 to 9 feet from car to let vapor disapate

there is no type of freon that is heavier than air. The only liquid you might get out of it is the lube in the system. Both R-134a and R-12 are bad for the atmosphere, R-12 is just worse. Take it to a shop to have it drained. There are laws against releasing it to the atmoshpere, but they probably won't find out about it.

Take it to a shop and tell them that you need to have the system evacuated.

Then they must hook it up and vacuum it out.

If you or they vent to the air, it is a federal offense with up to a $15,000 fine.

To top it off, Freon has been proven to eat the upper atmosphere. So if you vent to the air, you also are increasing the amount of UV rays hitting everything on earth. They have proven even an oz. of the stuff is enough to make a difference.

And this is a public board... if you just vent to air, you best never ever post it on here... the last thing we need is Feds carnivore or other programs searching the board for emissons and clean air violations. Its pretty easy to track someone down on the internet, and doesn't take much knowledge to see who you are.

Do you really think they can do that? Because I can say that I let freon out in the atmosphere myself, but I actually didn't. What are they gunna do? And even if you did, how are they going to prove you did?

Rumor is that it has happened on other boards, where law enforcement officals tracked down and arrested people for what they posted that they claimed doing.

And in New York or Vermont or one of those states back east, there were arrests of people that posted that they were street racing, and the posts were used as evidence of confession in court.

No law against taking it off. Do it yourself. It is against the law to openly vent freon into the air but regardless what the liberal lawmakers will tell you, freon does absolutely no harm to our earth. Anyone who thinks after billions of years we as humans can do anything to destroy this planet think to highly of us as a species. So save some money and take it off yourself, just let it vent.

Yeah because, in the last couple hundred years our civilization hasn't changed much at all from the last few hundred thousand years. I'm sure all these inventions and the exponential increases in industry have had no effect on our little chunk of rock. Liberal politicians made it all up...
Sheesh, that's the most bone-headed thing I've read in a very long time.

Nuclear winter?
Released biological agents?
Have you seen the air in LA/Mexico city?

Have a shop dispose of it. Although they don't really fine you if it leaks out over time do they?

You are right it doesn't harm the earth. Which will be around long after we are gone.

It temporarly (like only for a couple hundred years) harms the atmosphere, making the earth un-livable for humans, plants and animals.
