i'm such a newby
I logged on to tell everyone about my great discovery. I have always used Marvel Mystery Oil on older engines to clean the oil rings. It's like getting new rings on a Honda. It will actually stop oil usage. I have my 185K Explorer running like new with it.
So my 12a was running like crap - idling rough and dieing at stops signs. I disabled the stupid coasting valve thingy like you guys said, and that helped a little. I put a half quart of MMO in the gas tank and, now, it runs perfectly. Dead steady idle, now. After driving around for a while I thought I would pay my dues with some good info, but I find after a search that using MMO is old news around here.
Here's to your amazing forum!

think MMO would help my '81 prelude from smoking? lol... 2 bottles of Bardahl stop-smoke hasn't helped.... maybe I should just give in a rebuild the top end to fix the leaky valve guide seal....

Okay, so I was driving home from work and had to get up to speed fast to keep up and because I was in a sports car after all, and it started sputtering after holding the pedal on the floor at 5000 rpms. I was doing about 55 in third if the speedometer is right. I could imagine the float bowls running out of fuel, because when I slowed down for a minute, I got my power back for a while.
So I did a search and saw how many times Sterling posts his now famous fuel delivery troubleshooting procedure. You know, the one that starts out with something like, "start at the beginning and stop when it works." Well, tomorrow after I get a new muffler (not a glass pack because apparently they are too damn loud according to the forum) I will get a new fuel filter.
I have to say, though, that, of all the cars I have owned and fixed up, I have never seen or had problems with a clogged fuel filter. If it works, I will be surprised. I will not be a bit surprised if I need a new pump.
Okay, tell me how cool I am for researching my own questions again (this beats answering the questions, doesn't it?).
The car is certainly a hell of a lot of fun to drive.

My car did the exact same thing when I needed a fuel filter too man
. Id rev it out on the on-ramp to get on the highway and Id be doing like 70 in 3rd and Id get some hesitation, then it just kinda wanting to die. Let off and cruise for a little while, then downshift to 3rd around 50 or 60 and punch it and it doesnt really do it for a while (until maybe 80 or so in 3rd
).
My money is definatly on the fuel filter

Yup, fuel filter. Runs great now. Geez.
I also replaced the three stock cats with one high flow cat. Now I notice improved performance, but thay may be just becuase one of the stock cats was about half clogged.
Now I need to figure out why it is starting to idle funny. it has a regular surge of about 100 rpms about every half a second. It reminds me of an old Civic I had that had a bad float bowl valve. I am not too excited about overhauling the carb, though.

"Honest to god, it was stolen... *sniffle* I miss that car.... when's my check going to be here?"
Alright, I know this isn't a Honda forum, thank goodness, but I have a lot experience with them things. It's pretty easy to change the valve guide seals. and they go bad often. Just take off the valve cover, take off the rocker arm assembly, get a top-end valve spring compressor, and go for it. That'll stop oil from getting in from the top unless you have ever unscrewed the auxilliary valves. If you have, go ahead and drive it off a cliff.
To stop oil from getting past the rings, start changing the oil every thousand miles, and use MMO with each change. after about 5 of these, it will start working better.
Now let's get back to Mazdas.
