Tires ...which ones are best

Tires .... which ones are the best ...

We have broken down tires into several catagories and here is a short list of what I have experienced in our testing. Now remember, we do not have every single tire line in the world so, if your particular favorite is not in this list it is probably because we haven't tested it. Also, this is my take on the testing that I have completed here at The Tire Rack on our test track.

Maximum Performance:

These are the absolute best performing tires on the market.
Great steering response and wet/dry traction
(not for use inthe snow!!!) which is at home
on the track.

1.)S-03 Pole Position
2.)Pilot Sport
3.)P-Zero Rosso
4.)AVS Sport
5.)Ecsta MX

There is 1 glaring omission in this list. It is the BFG G-Force T/A KD.
The reason for this tire not being on the list is because of its lack of versatility.
It is the best performing tire in the dry but, is almost scary in the wet.

Ultra High Performance:
A step down form the Max tires but, still exceptional
performance which fits most application for a street
tire that can be driven very aggressivley.

1.) Firehawk SZ50 EP
2.) Potenza RE730's Generation II
3.) G-Force KD
4.)ES100
5.) HTR Z II
6.) HTR Z
3-6 are all very close in performance levels.

Ultra High Performance All Season
Performance tires which are capable of going through the snow.

1.) Pilot Sport A/S
2.) Sport 5000
3.) AVS DB Series II (the quietest tire I have driven)
4.) G-Force KDWS
5.) Pilot XGT Z4
6.) P7000 Super Sport

I hope this helps you in your tire selections

Thanks, Luke@tirerack

Great. I just picked up a set of Ecsta MX's and I can't wait to put them on. Are the numbers you have listed rankings or are they arbitrary?

Since were on the subject of tires and not just street only tires, what about the competion DOT tires. These would be for people who only drive thier cars on the weekend, on the twisties. Where mileage does'nt really matter or on track days. BFG R1's, A032R's, RS302's, Victoracers, Etc. Also where do the F1's place? Definitely above the Kuhmos, right?

I have been running the G-force KD's since last august. THese tires are awsome!!, hands down in my opinion the best street tire I have ever driven on. Sticks like glue on the dry and very solid in the wet.....
I was very nervous about running them in the wet, but come to find out they are great!! I absolutly love the way they drive in the wet. I live in the Northwest were we get alot of rain, and havent hydroplained once.

Thanks - Luke@tirerack

That cofirms what I have been told about the Pilot Sports. (Great tires but expensive) They are a tad heavier than the Hoosies also - steel belted - safer on the street or for those unwanted track excursions

I'd have to disagree with the order here.

1) Hoosier A3S03
2) Kumho Victoracer V700
3) Kumho Ecsta V700
4) BFG R1
5) Yoko A032R

The Pilot Sport Cup's are road racing slicks. They don't really belong in this comparison. Likewise with the Hoosier R3SO3's .... while they are R-compound tires and technically DOT-legal, it's really not an apples-to-apples comparison. If we're going to make a proper writeup, we'll need to distinguish between levels: (1) auto-x, (2) road/track racing, (3) drag racing. Obviously, my list is for auto-x tires.

You know, I just browsed at the subject as I opened the thread and started thinking to myself "What are the best tires? Isn't that a loaded question?"

However, this thread could be very useful to a lot of people. Perhaps a sticky or archiving it after a while?

Personally, I'm going with the AVS ES100s when I buy new tires next week. And yes, from the Tire Rack.

I'm currently on drag radials, but I want to change them, and try the S-03's. I'm on stock rims.
