What do you guys do in this situation?

Or are you too cool to drive in the rain?

 

Not sure if some of the hoods like the Mazdaspeed style (where the vent is just a small slit behind the bulge in the hood) would be worrysome in the rain or not.
I do know... the ones like the Knightspeed that have a pretty big hole right on top, they come w/ "rain blockers" to put on in the rain, hehe.

 

I have a Mazdaspeed (replica) style and don't cover the vents in the rain... water only drips down onto the back of the IC so I never really saw a need to. Now the scoot hood is a different story...

 

What about hoods with cuts in them, Iam sure you have seen them on supra's what happens, do you even need to worry about it?

Every hood has rain catchers you can buy.

 

I have had no problems with the STOUT hood, and I park outside.. been in 3+ days of rain at a time sitting and no problems starting. No problems or anything driving at all in the rain, I even go through touchless car washes , no worries. There are no rain shields on it, and there is not even any discoloration under the hood or anything. I got a little worried when behind a semi on the freeway the first time, and it was kicking up this fine tire wash mist.. thought it might affect the intake, but not a bobble.. hehe might even have helped - involuntary water injection/steam cleaning
I imagine the BORDER hood would have similar results -


I also use simple green and a hose to clean my engine/engine bay, so I got over the fear of water on the motor/engine bay a long time ago - just know where and where not to direct full pressure =D

 

I know some scoot hood replicas come with a rain gaurd that basically sits on top of the manifold.

BTW: The scoot hood rainguards do not keep out water...

rain is NOT a problem...i drove my fd with scoot hood in the rain and nothing happened.

 

RX7 Rage, I think the problem is not whilst driving, but whilst sitting on the driveway with a cold engine.

I have a Scoot Hood and couldn't put the rain guards on there. I noticed no problems...[that is til I totalled it last week.]

Anyways I had the hood for months and no issues. It rained plenty.

I had some questions about vented hoods too, and it's regarding the long term effects. So far it looks like no one is having any short term problems, but what about problems with long term corrosion? I am interested in the CF AE Amemiya AD9 hood or the similar looking CF Scoot hood (still trying to get over the center scoop). And with those hoods I dont want to have toworry about covering up the openings on rainy days.

Also, what parts under the hood would you not want rain falling down into? and also I saw somebody mentione pressure washing...what parts of the engine would you have to be careful with the pressure hose? I want to keep my engine bay clean, but I dont wanna harm any of the sensetive parts under the hood.

I live in sunny SW Florida (being sarcastic as it rains here every day in the summer) and have the Knight Sports carbon. Rain really isn't a problem, or wasn't, until I went single turbo. It became a problem because of where my T78 sits. Just behind the vent. Doesn't sound like a problem but it puts the K&N filter RIGHT UNDER the vent. K&N's don't like rain. They'll go from pink to washed white in one rain storm. Solution was to create a water shield that sits over the top of the filter. This of course creates the problem of trapping only hot air and not cool air from the top of the vent. Solution? Working on it at the moment. I'd like to use an enclosed snorkel-type carbon assembly to surround the filter. No room with the radiator so I'll more than likely repackage EVERYTHING up front. Should be fun, no?

 

How about a cold air intake setup? I was thinking along the same lines you are. If I go with the RE Amemiya AD9, or Scoot, (or any vented hood) I would get a intake with an enclosed box. I would still make sure that air is able to find its way to the filters through some duct work.
