Heres my plan...And I need some answers

My goal:

1. Streetport 12A rebuilt for turbo use (how the hell do I do this? What needs to be done? Low compression rotors I assume...What else?)

2. 2nd gen manifold for a T3 turbo made to fit the 12A

3. Used, rebuilt T3 turbo (maybe T3/T4 Hybrid? A little help here maybe?)

4. NPR intercooler (or large Volvo intercooler...)

5. Webber 45DCOE carbs and manifold

6. Custom exhaust and intercooler work

7. Rising rate FPR, and some kinda fuel pump.

8. N20 eventually

Ok, so what do I need to do to the engine to make it "turbo ready" and what kinda stuff do I need to do to the carbs? I later plan on upgrading to the TWM throttle bodies with a Haltech, but thats MUCH later...

Im gonna do this "a little at a time", and I plan on buying the parts here and there, and then when the engine gets rebuilt, throw it all together. How does this sound to everyone else? It should work right?

For the first one, do a there was a good thread not too long ago about that.

Other than that, it should work. There is someone on here who is driving a turbo 12A too. Get with him and he can tell you how his setup works to get you going in the right direction.

As covered by numerous posts what you plan is standard and covered by going search.

Is your RX road worthy yet?

Close, ever so close...Still waiting on the cash flow, but this has popped into my head cause I hae a line on a fully rebuilt T3 turbo from Garrett for like $150, and my friend was gonna loan me the money, so I figured that I would just check out what my plans are if I bought it...But im also gonna start a VW sand rail project soon with 3 other friends too...Im so busy .

won't comment on your setup, per se, because you're going to be the best judge of what will work for you. but one question you can use to help guide yourself in terms of your buildup, is "how much boost do i want when all is said and done?"

oh ... and you can also find out if TWM can supply you with a throttle body that will fit your DCOE (maybe 48 or something bigger) so all you'd have to do is tap your manifold for injectors ... just a thought ...

Actually, I was planning on upgrading to the TWM with a Haltech after more money comes in. As far as boost goes, I was only planning on running about 15 PSI at the most. More like 6-8 PSI daily, and 10+ only when I get carried away. I dont know, maybe that would even be safe on a stock engine?

how much boost does your T3 "efficiently" support?
well, as far as the motor itself is concerned, for a 12A, i would definitely encourage serious rotor work - and do a search to get an idea of how much boost is safe with stock compression.

a t3 turbo is way! too small for a turbo rotary, do what ryan (moremazda) did and put a turbo from a t2 on there. then just rebuild it with a better compressor wheel, id recommend a h3 thats supposed to be a really good wheel for all around performance.

i have no idea how your going to get a 12a low compression other than finding 12at rotors which people charge a assload for.

I asked the same qustion on another thread and Peejay said modifying the rotors is possible. Otherwise just keep the boost downto about 9psi max.

Hmmm...What are the specs on a T2 turbo? Are you sure that a T3 is too small? They are used on many 4 cylinder engines and stuff, I just assumed that a turbo made for a 2L (??) volvo engine might be big enough for my 1.1L rotary...

yeah positive they are too small unless you want full boost by 2000rpm and falls flat on its face by 5000. they are perfect turbos for honda motors and 2liters. but a rotary pushes alot of air and needs more air. i dont have the specs of a t2 turbo. from what ive understood and read a rotary is pretty much double its displacement of a piston so 1.2 = 2.4 6 cyl. my advice you can never go to big when it comes to turbos just too small

Didnt the Elford RX-7s use T3 turbos? Im still not compleatly convinced, lol . But if worse comes to sorse, Ill use the T2 turbo...I just cant find one in a damn junk yard, and there are TONS of Volvos out there . Matter of fact, I was at a junk yard two days ago looking at turbos and researching what cars used what, and had a guy offer to sell me a T3 from a 85 Volvo GLE 750 or something for $25. It wasnt too bad looking either, and it still spun REALLY easily (still on the car).

Oh, and what about a turbo from like a V6 thunderbird or something (did they even make those, or were they just supercharged)?

My supercharger came from a T-Bird "Supercoupe".
But they also made a "Turbocoupe"!

i would vote for the turbo off the T2 simply because it will end up saving you money in the long-run. aren't you going to have to get an exhaust manifold made to mate the T3 to your 12A anyway ... they're not TOO cheap (at least the good ones aren't!
i would tend to agree with rx7passion when he said the T3 is too small, and the boost characteristics are not suited for 12A (at least not without some serious mods). patrol the Gen II forum and see if you find people that have just upgraded turbos (and want to sell their stockers), or post a wanted ad.

Ok, well enough with the T3. How about a T04? I know that they make aftermarket manifolds to bolt a T04 up to a 2nd gen . I could get one of those, and a T04 off ebay pretty cheap . I dont know, maybe Ill just start with the stock 2nd gen turbo and manifold and then work my way up to a bigger turbo . Hell, this is all a ways away, Im just doing some homework in my spare time .

welcome to the headaches of turbocharging ...

i personally think that the T4 is too big for what it sounds like you are planning. however, i readily admit that i'm not an expert on this, so keep that in mind. how about getting a T3/T4 hybrid, and try having the turbine and impeller wheels sized and trimmed to your spec?

if not then, yes ... start with the T2 unit/manifold and sort out your setup, and then upgrade later after you've gotten some tuning done.
