if it is from a gsl-se it would have motor munts on the front cover and none on the oil pan. If it is s4 it has motor mounts on the bottom of the engine. S4 rear iron inspection cover has 2 bolt holes one on each side, s5 only has 1 bolt hole on the inspection cover. thats the external differences.

The spark plug holes are different from s5 to s5 as well

Coolant neck on top of the waterpump housing can also tell you between s4/s5. S4's have a filler cap on the neck, as where s5's do not.

Take the engine serial number to a Mazda parts person and they can tell you the vintage.

If it has an egr in the middle plate, then it is 88 and older. 89 and newer sixport engines didn't have egrs in the intermediate housing.

I've read all the threads and am still confused .Isent a picture to atkins rotary and they said it was a 89 -92 turbo. The intake gasket looks like a 86-88 model. The thermostat housing has a filler cap on it and I haven't found an egr valve. the rear iron inspection plate only has one bolt hole in it.

uh..the knock sensor is on the iron, not the housing, and s4's did have knock sensors. the TPS and coolant neck are s4's

The pics included above are for a S4 Turbo.
It has a narrow range TPS. S5's use a dual widerange TPS.
It also has the S4 twinscroll turbo.

Oh yeah and like said above. The knock sensor is on the front side of the oil fill tube(you can barely see it in your pic on the top middle)

Oh and a nother dead give away is the mechanical oil metering pump on the passenger side of the front cover.

uh, how about the metal filler neck? that'll tell you too. I dont know about the inspection panel tho... on both the 88 NA and 88 turbo engines I have, the inspection panel has one bolt. I dont have the full history of either engine, so concievably stuff could have been switched on both, but it doesnt seem to be that way.

…Yes it will work, you will have to enlarge the LIM-UIM gasket holes for the studs.

It really wasn't necessary to bring up a 6yr old thread that's completely unrelated..
