Good idea on waiting for the seat! I made that mistake once before. Petty Bar is the Bar that goes from the Drivers Right shoulder area to the passenger foot well area and really stiffens up the car. I guess Petty came up with it in the 70s.
Congrats on the cage. Nice work.

is this cage chrome-moly? Very nice work and I like the fact that the A-pillar bars hug the pillar itself and are tucked away nicely from sight.
I put a 5pt mild steel cage in my car (hoop behind the head, 2 bars going to rear, 2 bars behind the seats and 1 from shoulder to footwell) and the car felt much stiffer. I use the car primarily on the street and 10% drag racing.
Good luck and have fun racing......

Yes it is Chrome Moly. Its real nice stuff to work with. A little heavier but stronger. Sounds like you have a nice setup. If you feel the difference with the cage you have now just imagine if you carried it further! Good luck!
InitialD has a hell of a nice cage as well. I cant tell from the pictures for sure, do you have a "knee" bar (dash bar)? looks like it maybe in one of the pictures. Thats a big help also.

Mr. Spinner-No you are right, that just came out wrong. It used to be that you got a size break (which translated to a weight break) if you used Cr-Mo instead of mild steel, but not any more. It is stronger than mild steel, for equal size tubing (e.g. 1.5x0.095), but it costs probably 25% more so theres no real advantage anymore.
That and it requires special conditions when you weld it. You need a pretty much draft-free environment, so that the weld will cool at a constant, uniform rate, and anneal (sp?)properly.

Speedracer...
Im gonna go to some tracks and have fun, but its not a full blown race car, its my only car!
Demonracer...
Ahh, i know what you mean, no petty bar for me, I have both driver and passenger seats still, so i am not doing that bar.
GNX7...
No, it is mild steel...I've never even taken my car to the track, but i will probably also do about 10% drag and the rest of the time, you'll find me on I95 and other highways.
Chromoly is lighter, and with that, you must run slightly bigger pipes. The cost is more for the piping, like twice the amount. And also, to pass tech at most tracks, it must be tig welded... And i would have had to have someone put it in and then it would have cost like 5 times the amount this cost me!
I actually went and removed all the sound deadoning, all the mats, and anything else that was heavy... I actually took out the ac box behind the dash, and gutted it, then put it back in! (it mounts between the heater and the fan for those who didnt know, so it must be there for the heater to work ) I am laying down my own carpet in the front so it still looks good, but gets rid of our stock carpet with all the foam on it... More updates soon!

Pretty impressive cage work, although I'm amazed you did all that with the headliner and interior work in there still.. Are those tubes fully welded yet? Why'd you go with smaller tubes for the cross bracing?
I assume this is a drag car, because you're not SCCA legal with cross bracing..
Having built a cage myself, I know how much work that is.. Congrats!

Demonracer,
Any more pics of your cage? Yours looks very well done, and you didn't make the mistake I did and run your door bar upright to the floor (looks like you used the sill).
Here's mine:

To make it legal...
- You need a diagonal from the main hoop on the drivers side down to the passenger side of the main hoop (reference my pic)
- the x brace in the back would be legal if it didn't mount to the body (instead mounted to the two rear downtubes)
- same with the two smaller braces to the frame
- and lastly, either the a-pillar bar (which runs from the main hoop, along the roofline, and down the a-pillar to the floor) either must be a single uninterrupted bar, or you can have a one piece halo, which is a u-shaped piece that runs along the roofline on both sides of the car, and accross the top of the windshield. If you do the halo, then you can weld a-pillar bars to that. It's hard to see, but I'm not sure if you meet either rule or not.
Anyway, it's not important unless you decide to go door to door racing... If you eventually plan to do that, I'd recommend getting the SCCA GCR rulebook, and rethink the cagework.

Silkworm-
Nice! How close are you to being done with the car? Or are you done already and they are old pics? I havent seen a bad looking cage posted here yet! You know even though InitialD's might not be GCR approved he will still pass Tech somewhere. So lets not stress him out yet lol
