Can I do a T2 swap for under 2K?

This whole non-boosting thing is pissing me off! I was wondering if I can do an entire T2 swap(motor, tranny, drivetrain, etc) for under 2K if I find a good enough motor and do the work myself? I just want boost but don't want to buy a new car!

Hi don't think you could do the whole Turbo II swap for under $2000, I would suggest saving your money and buying a turbo II if you can find one in good condition.

Don't forget the intercooler, intercooler piping or turbo hood and oem intercooler (depending on which type of intercooler is used), the turbo itself, manifold, exhaust changes, turbo2 dash, intake manifold and throttle body, 550cc injectors, blah, blah, blah.
I've been researching the cost between this mod, an n/a turbo kit, and a supercharger kit from scratch. I've concluded that the cheapest way to get any boost is to create an n/a turbo kit. In order to make the numbers work, boost should be limited to 5-6psi to keep from buying all sorts of AIC and retard controllers. I'm no expert, but i think a intro. level kit can be assembled for under $1,500 if everything is done on the cheap.

Speaking of turbo kits, whatever happened to teamhavoc?

I'm doing a T2 swap for my 91 vert right now and it's becoming a money pit! If you want to do the swap, I suggest getting a wreck T2 donor car to make life easy. There are so many parts you will need to swap out and want to upgrade. I would say, you'll probably need $3,500 to do a good swap. If you're going to do the swap on a coupe, don't bother, you're be better off buying a T2. If you're doing the swap on a convertible like me, go for it! Nothing beats the feeling of an open top 7 on boost.

Amen, but with amendments:

Here's your $2,000 T2 swap: Sell your car, add $2,000 to the money you made, and buy a T2. Now you have boost.

Unless it is a convertible, I agree with this post 100%. IF it's a 'vert, buy a wrecked TII that runs and go to town.

88 'vert with slightly DIFFERENT power plans...
Hurry up Mazda, damnit!

For my Project 86 tthat I have been working on for almost a year now, it has cost me totally around $11,000 for what has been done so far. The TII swap itself cost around $1500. Here was my breakdown:

1991 J-Spec Motor Complete: $550
1987 TII harness, 87 TII ECU, 87 TII AFM, 87 TII Boost Sensor: $150
1987 TII Tranny:$200
1987 TII Diff, halfshafts, driveshaft, rear hubs(were included, but not needed) :$200
aftermarket BOV: $135
Mint TII Hood: $200
FD Fuel Pump: $50 (you need min TII pump)

Before you ask...yes I had to adapt the series 5 motor with the series 4 ECU etc... but that way I didn't have to run the 91 OMP It will have a Haltech in the next 2 months, so I am not worried.

The engine should have a stock IC and other things basic to the TII like 550cc injectors, the turbo...etc I got alot of my parts at a VERY good price due to some bargaining and trading for the N/A stuff. Matter of fact, I ended up selling the old N/A motor out of it for $750 Then add another $500 for the odds and ends you will need like vacuum hose and things like that. Overall, if you get everything you need to do the swap, it should only take a couple days to do the swap itself. I had mine started and finished in 2 1/2 days. It fired up the first time. The key to making a TII swap go well, is plain and simple...PLANNING

Let me know if you have specific questions on it or if you think you may need other things.
