I am trying to decide between staying twin or going single. But before i do that i want to upgrade my IC. I was originally goin to go with a Greddy FMIC but when i went to a local rotary shop one of the guys there told me FMIC's suck becasue every time you hit the gas all the pipping has to get re-pressured, causing lag. And with a SMIC there is very lttle piping making it more performance happy... But when you really think about it, isn't the intercooler there so the turbos get cool air, so wouldn't it make sense to put the IC in the frot bumper rather than in the engine bay!?

I'm really not on expert on any of this but that makes more sense to me.. But what if you had a SMIC and vented hood... would that help???

And I am wanting a FMIC.

Natural progression with Moding a FD3S is
gonna lead to a FMIC.

SO if you have a choice go with a FMIC
and save yourself the hassle, down the

stop fuckign telling people to search, if you wasted your time reading the post why not answer the guy, or if you cant answer just click teh back button on your browser.

smic is good for tracking the car, as in road racing not drag, or if you get on it mostly on the highway or higher speeds, because with a smic you need a some flow thru the bumper to let that air cool the intercooler down. if you all u do is drive around town that smic will get heat soak, and when u get on it from the stock all that hot air ill be shoved in your motor, not good. with a fmic the intercooler is almost outside of the car and will therefore be cooler most almost all the time, this is good if you do short bursts. the downside to the fmic is that the air that goes thru the intercooler goes to the radiator after to cool it down, and this will cause your engine to run hotter, especially if you are gonna road race the car. where the smic has its on duct to get the outside air and the radiator has its own. depending on your style of driving you shoudl choose the intercooler accordingly. hope this helps you

you can always buy aftermarket radiator to compensate the cooling effect. I think FMIC is always the best choice.

What about this turbo lag I've read about with the long pipes...the inefficiencies inherent in the longer runs of plumbing, etc....?

And you know what if you would have just searched you not only would have came up with tons of threads discussing advantages/disadvantages of both but you would have kept from wasting forum space with the 100th FMIC vs. SMIC thread ever created..

what can you do about the hotter temps if you go with fmic? vertical mount radiator like the shape of an I? how would that help?

I think the vertical mounting isnt really helping temps, but more for making space for the intercooler.

 

Maybe these will help you figure out somethings you can do to make your car run a bit cooler with a FMIC..

I saw a couple tricks in there dealing with the fans but there might be something else in there.

Also, the horizontal IC isn't truly effective without having a vented hood.

But, on the topic of SMIC vs. FMIC, it really boils down to what you plan on doing with the car and how much you're willing to spend on it. FMIC are generally more expensive and require more work (relocating battery, fabbing/cutting pipes, re-mounting radiator). Personally, I don't think the FMIC's are worth the hassle and the plus/minus game doesn't figure well for my purposes.

 

From what I've read the HMIC is just as effective as a large core SMIC...but as soon as you use a vented hood for either, SMIC or HMIC the cooling efficiency goes way up!
