I have been attempting to install fd wheels on my '88 gtu with larger tires. At first I ordered four 225/50/16 AVS intermediates. They fit fine on the rear but there was NO WAY that these would fit in the front. I exchanged two of the tires and got 205/55/16's.

I attempted to install these tires in the front and they were still rubbing the springs (stock). I decided to try out some 5/16" spacers(not hubcentric) with the factory lugs. The wheels and tires fit fine now with about 4mm of space between the sidewall and the spring.

Are there any huge drawbacks with using these spacers? I am still able to turn the lug nuts about 10 times. Should I get some larger bolts?

The H&R spacers are just too expensive, for that price (over $200) and what I paid for the FD wheels, I can almost get a good set of aftermarket wheels.

I've read through a lot of posts for and against spacers but most of these dealt with larger spacers (10 to 15mm). The spacers I have are about 8mm's.

RETed... why is that? an explaination would be more helpful that having the tire guys shot.... it was tirerack by the way, their IN warehouse.... anyway, my question was regarding the smaller spacers... I've never used spacers on any wheel before and I'm beginning to feel less confident when going into tight turns(I slow down now)....

I do notice the steering wheel vibrating at speeds over 60 mph but this was happening when I had the stock wheels/tires on. I'm getting an alignment soon so this should subside...

 

a 205 tire on a 8" rim sounds ok to me. It is commonplace to run a 215 on a 9" rim.

I would try a different profile maybe but 50 is not bad.


Some people like to have balloons on thier rims I guess.

 

I am looking at putting 3rd gen rims on my car (FC) also in the future and plan to run 245/45/16's all the way around with Mariah Motorsport flared front fenders.

I plan to AutoX my car and do some serious railing on the street as well and hopefully some assaults on the road courses in my area this summer (Sears Point, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill).

My current setup is using '89 T2 rims with 205/55/16's S-02's up front (got them used for free), and 245/45/16's out back on the 16x7" rim. K2RD.com coilovers and AGX's. I know I need an 8" rim eventually and am too cheap to buy custom rims and would prefer to run stockers if possible with spacers up front.

As Efrainf stated "what are the drawbacks with running a spacer up front?"

I have seen no real drawbacks from running them.

The only thing that could be a problem is that your tire will be hitting the fender during hard cornering.

I know some people don't like that.

 

Well I've decided to get some aftermarket 17" wheels. I found a really good deal on some light tuners. I did mount the FD wheels on my FC and did some hard cornering. Nothing is rubbing and I did not notice any drastic effects on the suspension. I used very thin spacers to get the wheels to fit and there was enough of the bolt left to safely mount the wheels.

 

Let me know if you want to get rid of them.

takerwolf, I put the wheels in the FS area of the forum. I will sell them with or without the tires. The tires are brand new, got them two weeks ago and have the receipt from the tire rack. They're AVS Intermediates(Yokes). I was hoping for a local buyer so they could come pick them up but I am willing to ship. I will include the spacers for the front.

I still need to post pics, hopefully I can borrow a digital camera and take pics of the wheels on my n/a.

I'm asking $350 + shipping for the wheel only. If shipping is not too much to MI, I can cover it.

Tires are $240 if you want them.

I've got 285s on 9 1/2" rims, and most SS Camaros come with 275/40/17s on 17x9s.

i used to have 3rd gen rims on my t2 it is fcking dangerous one of my wheels flew off the other day because these ******* have spacers my carlanded on the brake rotor andmy fender is fucked

 

what crack are you smoking.... it must be some good stuff!!!

215 on 9 inch rim. 9" rim should be for 245 - 275

the 8' wheel should be for 215 - 245 and its pushing it to put a 215 on it.

205 and 215 should be on 7 or 7.5"




as for your fd wheels on the FC.
they will fit on the back but they are way tucked in so your car will look kinda funny.

I wouldnt trust the kind of spacer you have on your car you said your getting some vibs when driving it.

you need 25mm spacers that lock to your lug and the spacer has lugs for fd wheels.

H&R makes spacers that work, and they aren't cheap.
