Which bearing is likely to be faulty if you hear a slight rattle-noise in the bell-housing when idling in neutral and the clutch pedal is out. (It goes away when I press the clutch pedal.) From doing a search on the forum, I don't think it is the pilot bearing, but can't find a specific forum thread, nor FAQ, that addresses the throw out bearing.
Mazdatrix mentions that "Throw-out bearing is bad if noise stops soon after clutch pedal is let up. Bearings are worn out if noise gets worse when pedal is let up."
- Don't those two sentences contradict each other? I'm confused, now. Anyway, when I let out the clutch, I hear the rattle. It just started doing this last night when I cranked it up for an evening drive after it has sat for about 2 weeks or so.

Throw out bearing.

 

The throwout shouldn't be making any noise with the pedal all the way out.

 

You have to pull tranny anyway, so replace both and stop worrying...

I have a weird whirling sound, Very high pitched and very constant. Won't go away when the clutch is down or up.

Any idea on what it could be?

 

This same issue was happening w/ my dad's FD and it was the Throw-out bearing. Aussiesmg is correct.

 

When the pilot bearing went out on my 2nd gen, it sounded like someone was grinding sand. Didn't last too long, as soon as the bearings are ground up, there was nothing left to make noise.

 

Yea,neither the T/O or Pilot will be "working" when the clutch pedal is released.The T/O isnt in contact with anything,and the pilot is spinning as a solid unit.

Sounds like the tranny input bearings since the input spins anytime the clutch is released,in gear or in neutral.Could also be the clutch fork rattling on a dry pivot....

I'd have to agree with Steve as well. I just completed an R&R on a white '83 GSL with over 200k on it. The tranny makes a wonderful noise in neutral. Probably bearings.

With the clutch pedal depressed, the sound goes away so I'm sure it's not the throwout bearing or pilot bearing. Another clue is all the noise in each gear up through 4th. It sounds like the funky REPU 4 speed which used to be in my rotary MG. Kind of a yahyuhyahyuh.

 

No noise when I drive it and moving through the gears; only at idle when I first started it. Once it warmed up I didnt notice it; however, it did the same thing yesterday afternoon after it had sat overnight.
Personally, I think it's the fork, too. We'll find out soon enough.

 

btw, I had the pilot bearing and the throw out bearing replaced. No more noise.

 

i have the same problem.. i have this grinding noise when the clutch is depressed.. n it goes away when the clutch is pressed.. im thinking its one of the bearings.. jsut thinking its not the clutch/ pressure plate

 

its the spicket bearing even if you put a new one they get noisy after about 1000 km so dont wory about it
