I just finished installing a pair of Crane Hi-6 ignitions on my leading ignition. I am firing 2 Crane LX-92 CD-only coils with Magnecor 8.5mm wires bringing power to the plugs. First impressions are Wow! Low and mid-range rpm are noticeably smoother. Transition to WOT is now neck-snapping! And high-rpm? The engine seems to pull effortlessly! We (Keith and I) took her up a hill that slows the car down quite a bit - not this time! The engine pulled better than it used to on a level road! 8000 rpm is no problem whatsoever (No power loss, sluggishness, hesitation - just pure power!). If it wasn't for ignition cut, I'm sure it would rev even higher! By my seat-of-the-pants dyno, this change, though expensive, is definitely worth it! I was wondering if anyone else did this and what their results were? It eliminates the power loss associated with firing 2 plugs with the same coil at the same time, and being forced to use the questionable stock coil (there have been many posts of high-rpm breakup with a high-power ignition). Oh yeah, and the chirping sound made by the 2 LX-92 coils at idle is neat!

Wow. Finally a good ignition storry... I might have to try this... WIll two msd 6a work the same. And the coil was aftermarket right. How did u hook it up or can u show us pics???

Hey, Ted. It wasn't all that bad - I bought 'em from JEGS last year for $320 for the pair, including the 2 LX-92 coils for free. I believe the Hi-6's with the free coil are selling for $190 each now.

Von, I will have a diagram posted tomorrow, I'm tired and must sleep now. Yes, I am using an aftermarket coil (the LX-92 I mentioned). I am using 2 of 'em, as a matter of fact (each ignition is firing its own coil). Yes, one could use 2 MSD-6A's. There are some disadvantages to doing so, however. One is the MSD is an analog system. It is set up for a V8. It fires for 20 degrees of crankshaft rotation on a V8. On a rotary, this translates to 40 degrees of crankshaft rotation. I believe 20 degrees is sufficient, and the spark plugs will last almost twice as long (the Crane digital ignition has a cylinder select, which I jumpered for a 4 cylinder, which gives you the correct 20 degrees of rotation for our engines). Another disadvantage is that these coils provide up to 500 milliamps of peak spark current. An MSD-7 would be required to fire these, so you will have to go with a weaker coil for the 6A (it's only good for 160 milliamps). Does the better coil make a difference? I don't know, I may try the LX-91 universal replacement sometime when I have about $90 to spend and am curious enough to find out (these would work fine with a MSD-6A). Now, this may sound like I'm bashing MSD ignition. On the contrary, I have one in my Maxima and it works very well. However, the Hi-6 gives you more bang for the buck (digital, high output current, weatherpack connector harness, single LED computer readout shows status, blinks trouble codes at ya!), so I like it better. Now that's the stuff! I wish my dad would wire up a dual ignition set-up for me. I might try and do it; although I am not very good at reading wiring diagrams.

 

I just placed my order for 2 Hi6 boxes and 2 LX92 coils at JEGS

They have a deal at the moment as a kit for $189.99US for a HI6 with the coil.

In Australia JUST on box and one coil is about the same price as TWO from JEGS !!!!!

Once I install I will tell you how I go, my car is on the limit at the moment with the transistor ignition and I want to run it at 600bhp with the water/methanol injection ON FULL capacity so I need a strong spark with cold plugs

 

What about 3?? One for each leading and one for the trailing?

 

so you just did the default wiring of the crane.. but how do you seperate out the front from rear signals if your running these in parallel.. or are you just after signal response and letting it be a wasted spark ?

 

Wow, talk about dragging one out from the dead...

You can just split the ignition signal off the ignitor into the HI-6/coil pair.

Any leads on where to get a crane hi-6 and lx-92 cheap Ted? The prices listed above are a year old, heheh search engine works good aye? Oh yeah, what about three instead of 2?

 

I had a link one some really cheap HI-6's (sans coils) for like $110 each.&nbsp If you're interested, I can go dig them up.&nbsp I dunno what you're building, but CDI boxes on the trailings are overkill unless you're talking over 500hp?

would this mod be good to do with a 1st gen distributer?
I've got one and am thinking about putting it on, maybe using GM coils....

 

Sure, I'd recommend a CDI box for any rotary engine...
There are instructions for distributor system installations.

Yeah 110 is cheap. Jegs has them plus the coil for 199 but I can get trhe coil seperately for 50. So you think 2 would be fine? One on the leading and one on the trailing or both on the leading and factory on the trailing?

And nope, not looking for 500+, shooting more for 430's at the wheels. Dunno how close we will get, 62-1 .96 divided. 1600 secondaires/custom fuel rail, haltek, 9 to 1 rotors instead of the factory low compression, marvelspeed porting, hurey 3mm and a boost controler. Probably not gonna boost much over a bar. Don's doing the work and i'm 400 miles away so I just told him what I wanted and he's doing what he thinks it should have.
