I want to buy a 1988 Rx-7

I am looking to buy a used 1988 RX-7 turbo. The body is in good shape, but that don't matter because i wil be doing slight modifications to the body. From what I was told from the owner it has a 130,000 miles on it and runs ok. What should i do. I really don't know too much about rotaries so i don't wanna get screwed and have to rebuild when i get it. As far as i know it doesn't have over heating problems either. Thanks for your help.

Um, no offense but the only question I saw there was "What should I do." What are you wondering? If it is an 88 turbo then it would be the 10th anniversary edition & would be white with a black interior. How much do they want? Is it a rebuild? "Runs ok" meaning?Any mods on it? Any pics? Need to give us a little more to work with here man.

What should you do as far as buying the car? Before you buy it check these things out.

compression test with qualified technician(very important)
check that the wiper switch works properly on all setting
headlight switch works
check A/C and heater(every switch/slide on climate control)
pop rear hatch and verify drain plugs are not stopped up(rust)
oil cooler lines are prone to leaking when older
sun roof works with out helping it slide forward or backward

Thats most of the common things I can think of. I'm sure I missed something but if any of these things are questionable use it to your advantage when bargaining on the price of the car.

bader02,

Hey welcome to the forum.

Here's a good post you should check out that should help:

https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...light=personal

FPrep2ndGenRX7 pretty much covered the basics. If the engine does truely have 130K miles on it, that's about 10-20K miles before a normal rebuild is done (usually 150-180K miles on the 88 models).

Definitly have a compression test done. Most people either buy them cheap and rebuild them or pay a slight premium for "new engine," "low engine miles," or "recently rebuild."

After checking out that other post, feel free to ask some more questions

Not all 1988s are AEs. Only 1500 of em, and theyre all white w/ black leather interior fully loaded w/ special 10 AE rotary badging

If you read it again, I said if it is an 88 turbo it is an AE.

Sorry, but again - not true! There were plenty of 1988 Turbo II's that are not 10th AEs. The 10th AEs are simply a subset of the 88 TIIs.

Well hey, way to put me in my place I have never heard that before. Guess you do learn something everyday. Oh ya, I have never heard of anyone having an 88 TII that wasn't a AE so could you point one out to me? Thanks again.
