I ordered a kit with new main bearings and rotor bearings. My question is; I assume I need a press to get the old ones out? And to get the new ones in? What kind of press do I need? How mny LB. Capacity? How long does this take to do if I take them in somwhere? What else do I need to know about the process of replacing them?

Unless your bearings are SHOT, don't bother. Even on Bruce Turrentine's rebuild tape he doesn't recommend messing with the bearings unless you really need to.

It's VERY tricky work to remove and re-install them, and yes you need a serious press to do the work right.

Well the bearings look like they are in okay condition .. but the motor had 130k miles on it. I would like this to last as long as possible .. plus I already payed for the bearings I might as well use them. Is it really that hard? Has anyone done it before?

I am drawing a complete blank on where the main bearings even go? (I'm at work, so I can't look at the motor) Are they as hard to replace?

 

i pressed out a main bearing (in the stationary gear) and it ruined the stationary gear. everthing ive ever read says used bearings are better than new ones (unless its damaged), 130k is nothing for those bearings, its not a piston engine

Yep, you got it right.

The "main" bearings (stationary bearings) go in the stationary gears at the front and rear of the motor.

Rotaries go a lot easier on the bearings due to the motion of the engine - piston engines are pounding up and down on the bearings, that's why they're always changed.

Leave 'em be and you'll be good to go.

Well, im going to make a good visual inspection of the bearings tonight .. if all looks okay I will just leave them be. Sounds like I can do more damage then good.

 

If the outer grey layer is wearing off exposing the bronze underneath, you need to swap it. Otherwise, just let them be.
