Steve, first of all, CONGRATS man. I'm tryin to get to where you're at man. You're a few months shy of being an attending!!! I see you're in Charlottesville; you @ UVA?

Oh and you have NO IDEA how good it is to hear your comments man. Right now I'm at the point where I need all the reassurance & positive feedback I can get hehe. I just finished my junior year, started my senior year, takin Step II CK & CS this month (God Willing), then gotta get my ERAS in order, recommendations, interviews, and finally the MATCH :sigh:

What type of medicine are you planning on practicing?
Surgery. Specifically Trauma (I LIVE for the blood 'n guts routine hehe). My biggest issue is the incredibly looooooong road I still gotta travel before *beginning* my career, and the fact that horrible hours are inevitable. I personally wouldn't mind horrible hours if I still could still have semi-decent time off (say, 2 days off a week, vs just 1). Plus I get to look forward to becoming the #1 scutter, full of wonderful hours of floorwork. Yaay! lol. Geez. Don't remind me man. I'm just tryin to relax and enjoy this year as much as I can before it's too late!

Hey btw, if you have any tips re: ERAS, interviews, etc, I'd really appreciate it

PS- any idealism in this post may be the result of finishing a 17-hour straight surgery this morning followed by rounds, ER consults, etc. My perspective may be skewed a titch. I'll hate my job tomorrow.
17 hrs? ENT doesn't rotate on the transplant service, does it? lol. What surgery was that? If I had to guess, I'd say something highly vascular requiring a LOT of careful dissection?

Props to MD's, those people are crazy in my eyes work all the time!
LOL pray you're not managing MY finances. I, like the government, am currently heavily involved in perfecting the art of deficit spending So yea, you wouldn't be making much off of me, that's for sure

Ramy,

Yeah, I'm at UVA. Its a great residency! The case was resection of a laryngeal/pharyngeal cancer, with removal of the entire larynx, bilateral neck dissections, and a radial forearm free flap for reconstruction. Its the free flap that eats up the time (microvascular anastamosis), but its worth it . Anyone who thinks that smoking only gives you lung cancer...guess again !

I matched when ENT was an 'early match' program and didn't have to deal too much with ERAS, but my understanding is its now more straightforward. My advice to you is to get into a surgery program that has some heavy-hitters in the department. Those attendings will be able to pick up the phone on your behalf and call the fellowship directors of the places you want to go and that is PRICELESS. I know most of the surgery attendings here quite well...let me know if you are interested in coming here and I'll put in a good word for ya.

I'm headed for a year of fellowship myself next June. Louisiana for a reconstructive facial plastics gig. Then (finally) I'll start looking at academic jobs . You'll be busy as a trauma surgeon, but with a lot more ICU/Intensivist stuff than I could stomach! Good luck, and PM me with any questions.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! UVA's a top school, no questions asked, so I'm not surprised.

Geeeez man. Sounds like you had fun LOL. That's insane man. I didn't even know about the ENT reconstructions w/ flaps & grafts etc until a presentation one of the ENT docs gave (he's one of the top 10 docs in the country, too!). Wow that's time intensive. I hope you pulled up a stool my friend lol.

You know, it's funny you mention that. While going through everything right now for Step II, I came across an interesting fact. While there's a very high correlation between smoking and lung cancer, guess what has an even CLOSER correlation? Smoking and transitional cell cancer! Apparently smoking is among the strongest risk factors for urinary system cancers! Go figure!

Lucky for you my friend. Wasn't even aware ENT was an early match.

Very true. Thankfully, trauma fellowships have NEVER been completely filled over the past few years...there are *always* empty spots (that should probably tell me something, shouldn't it? ) But yea, you def. wanna get any competitive edge you can so you can pick where you wanna go...

I know most of the surgery attendings here quite well...let me know if you are interested in coming here and I'll put in a good word for ya.
Now I am! haha. Seriously...surgery's getting much more competitive these days...

I'm headed for a year of fellowship myself next June. Louisiana for a reconstructive facial plastics gig. Then (finally) I'll start looking at academic jobs .
Wow...that's awesome. I've always been interested in/fascinated by reconstructive plastics. My dad specialized in hand reconstructive back in the day...

Yea I know I know...what can I say

Good luck, and PM me with any questions.
