Anyone from Thailand still on here?

I'm living in Bangkok for a year now and would love to find some rotorheads here.

RX-7's are crazy expensive here. Even old 1st gens command an outrageous price.
Asking price for an FD is around 1.2 million Bhat.
That is $40,000 at the average exchange rate.

Here is one on sale now for 1.7 MB.

Doesn't surprise me in Thailand where a new Mini Cooper is about $60,000 because of import taxes.

I have seen hundreds of mini coopers in Bangkok in the last year. Almost all of them S models. I have also seen a few of the old mini driving around.
The car culture in Bangkok is amazing. Before moving here I never would have imagined how many proper car crazy people are here.

200% on imported cars in Thailand

All cars in Thailand are crazy expensive because of the 200% tariff on cars. Used cars are basically impossible to import (unlike Mexico, they don't want to become the dumping ground/salvage yard of wealthier neighbors). Even when you can get a used car in under special rules, there's still a 200% tariff. So, if you consider a decent FD is ~US$15K, you see why the same car costs ~$45K in Thailand.

Are there any local forums, clubs, or websites for Mazda rotaries in Thailand? I'm hoping to buy an RX-8 in December. I want to find a good rotary mechanic in the Bangkok area. I am hoping I might be able to get a lead on a good car through one of the groups as well.

Any recommendations for groups, forums, and especially mechanics will be appreciated. If they speak English, that's a bonus, but not necessary.

Cheers,
Brian

Theres a pretty good car scene there but you have to know the language and work your way to them. Just like Japan they have their poor man car scene, mid class and rich

The car scene in Thailand is nothing like Japan. The people who do mod cars have deep deep deep pockets. I know one FD owner in BKK and he rarely drives the car except for an occasional car show outing. The fear of getting the car stolen or damaged by Thailand's notorious good drives (SARCASM) keeps his Amemiya built gem in storage 95% of the time.

The craze in Thailand right now is diesel trucks but every once in a while you will see a real WRX, modded Cefiro, real EVO or real Civic. I have to put emphasis on the word real because it is common in Thailand an other SE Asia countries to "try" and make a base model car looking like a higher model level. Rotories are a rare breed in the land of smiles (LOS) but I have seen a couple RX-3 in Korat. Thailand has some serious love for the 2JZ so you will see that motor in just about everything if just happen to come across a modded rwd car.

Thailand is finally getting good again. Pratchab Street Circuit just had their first race, huge turnout, amazing cars, I missed it and really regret not going. Here's a link to some Facebook pics. Tons of FDs, all sorts of other cars.

Looks like the site won't post Facebook stuff.. I hope this works and doesn't get me in trouble..

And here's some Youtube stuff. Skip to 6:40 to see the RX7 content. Amazing cars.

Some pics. Mostly rotary, but I had to include some shots of this Time Attack Lambo, one of several there.

Super cool, Monaco on a Budget type track vibes, right on the beach running through the town

Lots of small tracks here, lots of shops. Bangkok has quite a few rotary specific shops, Rotary Revolution being one of them. They brought most of those RX cars to Pratchuab.

The racing pickup trucks are crazy as well, lots of pics online, worth a look.
