It all depends on where and who you know etc...
Do you drink? If so you will be spending a lot of money cause a 12oz can of beer costs around 2 dollars US where as in the states you can get a 40 for that much hahahaha.
You can find rental rooms for around 400 US for a month with community kitchen and bathrooms.
If you are trying to do anything car related it is going to be expensive since you will have to rent a car or take the train and then taxi's and then if you dont speak japanese along with that it can also be difficult.
Basically you need to think about it a lot more. It is not like Europe where you can travel all over living out of your Back pack atleast not in my opinion.

yeah, unfortunately it's 1 of those questions about japan that is so wide open that answering it is basically useless......
how much does it cost to stay in new york?, anywhere from zero dollars a day to a thousand dollars a day....
buy a lonely planet guide and read the front to get a better idea, 30bucks that can pay from itself from money saved getting to tokyo from narita
the keisei? line limited express to ueno station rather than the narita express to tokyo station
