Tacho acting up???

I'm posting this here first, but if nobody can help I'll try the first gen forum.
We have been finishing and detailing my fathers SA lately, and ever since we got the clutch right (master cylinder was rebuild, after that it works perfect) We have been taken it for a few laps around the block now and then.
Lately the tacho is doing strange things. When powering the electrics (bringing the key to the position before actually starting) the tacho goes to 5000rpm and stays there. Then when the car runs it drops dead.
I thought a coil could cause this, so I unplugged the pick up wire from the coil. Since this means the tacho is no longer connected to the coil, I was expecting the problem to go away. But no result. Any ideas? The car ran fine before, but we only recently plugged in an alternator regulator (had it running on the battery in the past), as this was missing (SA have an external regulator). Can this cause something like this? I'm planning to unplug it as a test as soon as I have the time, but wanted to ask anyway. There seems to be very little in the circuit of the tacho, so it seems strange that it acts up like this.

Ehhh sorry , but isn't this suppose to work this way on SA? on all SA's the tacho function is also as a voltage meter, after the engine runs, the (external) regulator gets power from the altenator and it will drop and show the revs
I rathing think the Rev wire is not connected to one of the coils....
Or you have bad external regulator / and /or wrong type of altenator, (the type with the build in regulator)

aha, thanks Mireck. I'm not very familiar with the typical SA things. I'm more used to S2 and S3 cars. And those have "real" voltage meters. Anyway, I'm still wondering why the revs don't show anymore. I'll have a look soon.

It's ok by now, indeed a wire wasn't connected. Kinda strange, I had everything checked before, and actuaaly driven the car with the tacho working! Well, it works now.
