Part Four: The TII

First of all, I need to say

1. Sorry for not keeping you all better posted. No, I haven't gone to Iraq, thankfully. Nor am I likely to be, at least not until June. The first week of my absence was due to final exams for the school term. The second week was due to a vacation I took with my girlfriend, a 6-day tour around most of the country (Iceland). The third week, until today, was due to working late shift, and being too lazy to update when I got up.

2. Thank you all for your concern. It really means something to me that you wished me well in my absense. Though I don't have to go now, and hopefully never will, the possibility always exists. It helps knowing that I have friends all over Europe that think about me.

OK, now, on with the story...

"A TII, you say?" I asked, incredulously.

"Yes, a 91, I think." He told me of how he had known of the car and its previous owner. He also said it had been offered to him when it was first wrecked, but he didn't have the time to fix it.

He told me where to find it. I had driven by it many times, strangely enough, but hadn't seen it. More odd was the fact that it wasn't too far from his shop (Erlingur was his name, BTW, the 86 Sport owner), which I apparently had also driven by without knowing.

With that news, I was ready to go see my third FC. I thanked him immensely, left my e-mail and phone number, and also got his. I could barely contain my excitement as I rushed back to my car, with my girlfriend still waiting. I gave her a brief on what transpired, and explained to her my need to see another car, and one in a junkyard at that.

We headed off to the other side of the city. I knew the area, but had never known about the yard before, because it was on a hill, and not easily seen from the street. We got there in near-record time, and I found the yard rather easily. Interestingly, the car could be seen from the road, if you knew what to look for.

We parked, and I got out to look, although my g/f was a little concerned, since it was by now almost midnight. I didn't have any problems, though, and I managed to get as good a look as possible in the dark (thanks to the street lights not too far away). Sure enough, it was a black S5 TII. It had been rolled, obviously, and all of the outer glass was broken. It was missing both front fenders, the front bumper cover, and the front seats, but the rest was fairly intact. I wondered secretly how much it would be sold for. "I must save it from certain doom," I thought, "I have to have it!"

Feeling a strange mix of ecstacy and emptiness, I headed back to my car. How could my mass-produced econobox compare to the power and mystique of the FC's I had seen that night? It simply couldn't. I tried to explain this to my girl as we headed back home....

I think I may just have to make up for lost time and post Part Five tonight as well.

BTW, that was post number 1300 for me (as in 1300 cc's).

Actually, 1308 would be more appropriate, I guess.

Look forward to part 5

Sorry about not posting Part Five last night. I was a bit busy at work, and might not have time to get to it tonight, either. I should have time in the next day or two to finish, though.

Part Five: The Crazy Salesman

A couple days later, I went back to see what the junkyard owner wanted for the car. I wasn't expecting it to be cheap, of course, since it was one of the only cars like it in the junkyards of Iceland. Turns out I was right, and then some.

It took me a little while to find how to get into the building. I couldn't find the front door (still don't know where it is), so I had to go in the back. After wading through a sea of cars and parts in the indoor storage, I made my way to the office. I found the owner and asked him about the 7.

Maybe it was because I went in there wearing my Mazda ballcap and RotaryNews.com t-shirt, maybe it was because I was American, or maybe it was because he was just insane. Whatever the cause, effect was that he wanted WAY too much for the car. In exactly the condition it was, without being able to show that the engine would run, he wanted 150.000 Icelandic Krónur for it without the wheels, or 180.000 kr with them. At the time, this equated to roughly $2000 - $2400 US. Just crazy!

I asked him why he wanted so much for it, and he said that there were several FD's in the country that needed engines. I tried to explain to him that the 13BT and 13BREW weren't interchangeable without serious modifications, but it was no use. I also explained to him that I could buy a car in this shape for $500 or less in the States, and that for the price he wanted, I could buy a running TII (ok, S4 in not great shaoe, but running, anyway), but he wasn't hearing that, either. He had his price, and he was set on it.

It shouldn't come as a surprise that the car sits there still...

Up next: Part Six

No, really, I swear, I actually have the next three parts already written for a change. Stay tuned tomorrow...

Or whan the traffic light is at red... You don't have to stop at a traffic light when you are on foot.
Or when my car says "gas tank empty". I don't have to tank if I don't want to!Yes sure...
You don't have to gas up your car if you can take a taxi.
