Moving to Germany. Bring the 7?

Hey is anybody stationed over in Germany with there RX7 right now? I just found out that I'm getting stationed over there and I'm worried I might not be able to bring the 7 with me. The car is not stock. The list of my mods is in my sig if that might help.

it has been discussed before in this forum, try search older posts....and i think outcome was its not that big deal of finding someone at base getting you inspected and tagged even with modded car..

Yeah I know, I was just hoping for a quick answer. My buddy just got there with his EVO IX and I'll be in touch with him to see whats up.

The only thing my mom (Army) remembers was just a simple safety inspection.

I lived there from 1990-94, but I don't remember much about anything to do with cars.

I'll search around.

I'll be in the K-town area.

Nice, it would be awesome to meet ya! How far do you live from the K-town area? I would love to visit your shop to check it out instead of just pics.

I won't be there until December though.

591 km – about 5 hours 28 mins drive

its not that bad, mostly on autobahn so it could be done in shorter time....

They have recently changed some of the regulations for our inspections. It is becomming increasingly difficult to pass with modded cars.

If your exhaust is loud then you better plan on shipping a stock exhaust with you in your household goods. And it better not leak AT ALL IN THE SLIGHTEST LITTLE BIT. I passed with an RB Rev TII system just recently, but I honestly think that I got lucky because I think they mistook my presilencer for a cat and didn't notice that most of the system is 3" and obviously not stock. You can bring your aftermarket one with you also and put it back on after inspection. You can get a ticket for it, but unless your just a total moron or your exhaust sounds like God screaming at you, this is very unlikely.

If you have any oil leaks I suggest you fix them before you bring it here and degrease the living **** out of your engine while you still can (legally).

If you have ANY tint up to and including a small visor tint, scrape it off.

If your car has any rust don't even bother to bring it for 2 reasons...
1.) It will be a bitch to get it passed without fixing it and in some cases not possible at all to pass it depending on where it's located and...
2.) Germany will eat your car. This place is almost as bad as Okinawa when it comes to the elements (salt on the roads in Germanys case) causing rust to form on your otherwise rust free car.

If you have aftermarket fog lamps take them off before you go through inspection (you can put them back on after inspection)....don't ask me why this is illegal because it makes absolutly no sense to me what-so-ever....

Make sure ALL of your lights, your horn, and your windshield wipers work. It's apparently ok if they [windshield wipers] don't zero out because mine don't and they passed it. Also make sure your headlights are aligned correctly.

Make sure all 4 of your brakes (and your e-brake) are in GOOD working order. They can tell if just one of them is failing.

Make sure you have sufficient tread on your tires and that they are in good shape. As far as this is concerned, it is in your own best intrest because autobahn speeds are MUCH higher than any stateside highways. I strongly suggest you buy 100 MPH+ rated tires because you will go over 100 MPH often.....I do, at the very least, twice a day coming to and from work. Blowing a tire at 100+ MPH is nothing to mess around with...

You will need a first aid kit and a warning triangle. Don't get these in the states because it will most likely be the wrong one. Wait till you get here and then get one that has a safety vest and emergency blanket in it.

Make sure you have your spare and that it has air in it. I wouldn't roll up to inspection with a bunch of crap in your trunk either because you will have to physically show them the spare.

There are other things, but those seem to be the most important. Now when you go to register it most likely you will have to go to Kapaun to do that. If you are AT ALL unsure if you will pass or not then get your temp tags and try like hell to get someone to show you where Baumholder is and actually get the car inspected there. I cannot speak from personal experience, but from what I understand they are the most lenient. You can also go to Ramstein to get it inspected. It is closer (than Baumholder) and they (for the most part) aren't as bad as the guys at Kapaun. The guys at Kapaun are friggin' inspection ****'s so don't go there unless you absolutly have to.

If you do decide to bring it here and you can afford it....stock up on misc. parts (gaskets, bearings, brake pads, etc.) because the Euro friggin' sucks horribly bad right now and the less you have to deal with German dealerships the happier you will be.....TRUST ME. It's also a good idea to get a friend or family member set up that can ship you misc. stuff you might need for the 7 because it can be difficult to find stuff here sometimes.

Weither you bring it or not if you ever want to talk rotary then come up to the Landstuhl Auto Skills Center on the weekends and ask for Eric. I'll be the guy with all the Mazda patches on my work shirt...

Oh....I almost forgot...Don't be afraid to post up in our car club thread stickied to the top of this forum. It doesn't get used much because we have our own web site now, but I check it frequently and most of the local 7 owners pop in there from time to time.

I think Graf is a ways away from us, but you are more than welcome to hit us up! Come by the Landstuhl Auto Skills Center on the weekends and look for the white vert...

Man, I feel sorry for you. I was stationed at Ramstein, lived in Vogelweh, and did a short TDY to Graf. There is almost nothing out there (Graf). Graf is like 4-5 hours from K-town. Vilseck is like 20 minutes away, but even at that base there isn't much. Be sure to ask about the Greek restaurant in Vilseck. The food there is awesome and fairly priced.

Oh yeah, back on topic. I recently left Germany and getting your car shipped back out of Germany is a complete bitch. They practically want your car to be perfect. Everything K.ronic said is absolutley true.

On the positive side, you're in the middle of Europe. Go to Bavaria and all that surrounds you. Being that you're headed to Graf, I'm assuming you're in the Army. I' m Airforce. I hope that your unit, battalion, what have you is pretty good about letting you guys take leave. The family and I managed to go to 7 different countries while stationed there.

you should do an lsx swap before coming to germany save on gas money and have autobahn power. just be prepared for hardship if you bring a rotary over and pop a seal. the euro is also almost double the amount of the dollar and its starting to get expensive to do things off base. being in Graf will suck for a single person. if your a family man, well there isn't much you could do anyway besides traveling away from graf.

Yep, I'm still headed over there. Just have to get a few things done to the 7 before I can ship it out. Mainly getting a cat welded up and maybe another presilencer.

Does anybody see anything in the bay that could give me major problems for inspection?

Awesome engine bay, congrats. I think the German folks will be impressed. I took my 88 GTU when I was stationed in Giessen and had no problems at all. It was pretty much stock so I figured that helped. Good luck.

They won't even pop the hood. They only look at it from underneath. Make sure you don't have any oil leaks and that your exhaust is sorted out and you'll be ok. I just went through instenction again and everything I said in my first post in this thread still applies.

Well I got extended till Jan 09, but the car will be gone this week on its way to Germany. I installed a cat and presilencer, but I think the car might be to loud still. I guess I'll find out at the inspection station.

about noise, it depends where you get your inspection done. the inspectors don't sit there reving your engine. if you have any issues take your car to Schweinfurt. They like impots with mods. RX7'S are not very popular here just like any other jap car. Good Luck, Don't miss German Race Wars

hi

i think your car should be ok.

my exhaust on my rx7 is louder than the racingbeat exhaust from K.Ronic and i'`m german... but for the german Tüv i install a cat in it.
if your car is older than....xx.1989 you can have more noise here and more emissions. but i don`t know how are the laws for you american guys here in germany.

maybe we can meet us in K-town in next time

I would love to meet up with some German Rotary owners!

Thanks for the advice.

Just swapped some stock headlights back in. Cleaned the interior. Had hell of a time finding a decent spot to mount the front license plate frame.

Are there any big Rotary/Mazda meets over there?
