Question Tuning Experience???

Just curious how many people actually have tuning experience prior to buying a stand alone ECU and trying to tune it themselves.

I had worked with my friend on his E6S a few years back on a blown camaro (that I put into the wall at Sac Raceway). I also had read a bit about IC motors and how EFI works and such before I even bought my FD.

Jay! You put a camaro in to a wall!!! Sheesh! Umm, I can't answer that question as I haven't purchased an EMS, and know that it can't be that easy to tune! (Hey, I just don't know enough yet)

The rear end locked up as I went through the traps. The back end got really loose and I did not know why. I corretc and over corrected and the car kind of did its own thing. I just bounced off teh wall really. The car needed most of the front right replaced (grille, bumper, hood, fender). Trap speed was 136, so I was not going to slow at the time. Funny thing was, the car had just been sold and the guy was picking it up the next day. My friend has not really spoke to me much since then. I just do not know why either

His car was my first experience with tuning of any kind. Since then I have worked on numerous FDs and FCs tuning them.

PS That is not the reason why I do not liek drag racing, it is just boring.

mine is the first haltech ive ever seen. there have been a couple of others, between the time i got the thing and the time it was running. so far its pretty simple, the tricks are not how to use the thing but numbers to tune to. my 20b runs really well but getting more than 10mpg is the trick.

I was thinking between a turbo kit or the Haltech. I figured it would be the best idea to have control of the fueling since that seemed to be the trouble with tuning rotaries. I didn't have a clue when putting it in but with all of the help it wasn't too bad. I am glad I put it in because it offers so much flexability.

My 2 rupies.

The poll should have another entry:
- Tuned my own car.

PFC, wideband and datalogit map watch make it easy.

That kind of falls under 'tuned several.' Most people that have tuned there own car and buy another one and tune that one have tuned others.

um, i have played around abit.

From what i can tell, fuel is pretty easy, just takes some time to get it perfect, and the right equipment

As for timming, i don't want to touch it.. i will probably use someone elses map and almost leave it alone..

From what i have heard from people who know thier ****, you tune until the engine blows up and then rebuild and back it off 3*

I guess most tuners do timming mostly by the sound of the engine. EGTs are to slow to acuratly tune by.

Got a dyno sheet to back up that statement? A time slip?

Max power is not always the point. My goal is to put the usual mods on the car to improve flow but still be able to tune it to match the target AFRs that Mazda has in the original ECU. Extra power, cool running and very little chance of detonation under many conditions. Other than some added stress the engine should last as long as a stock setup will under the same conditions.

As for a time slip, sorry, straight line racing bores me as much as NASCAR. My prefered venue is road racing.

No, I am not talking about FAST=one time run/dyno slip. About anyone can do that almost one time.

I am talking about a benchmark of sorts, to say how much HP you can make at say, 10 or 12psi.

You take a dyno run, and you datalog INJ duty, knock, boost, IGN, etc.

Then that becomes a benchmark that you can say shows you tuned a car.
