Is A Stand Alone Ecu Worth The Money For Power Gain?
I'm from South Africa, and am thinkin' about gettin a SA ECU for my '93 FD. I'v got a full 3inch exh. , HKS air filters, HKS piping and silicone hoses, a bigger radiator, and re-built turbos, but however am still a scholar. I'm thinkin' of gettin an Apexi power FC and commander kit which costs around $1100-$1300, how much more power will this get me when tuned properly. Is Haltec or Microtec a worthy option too?
We have some very good tuners here but they are mostly experienced with the Microtec and Haltec systems, so is the Apexi sys. very different to the other two or should they be able to figure it out?

What's your application? I wouldn't even consider a Microtech. The Haltech is okay, there are better solutions out there (e.g. MoTeC M400, Autronic SM4). If all you want is a plug-and-play solution, then get the PowerFC. If your tuner can't figure out how to use it, then find a new tuner.
It's not so much the gain you get, but the gain you CAN get.
I see a standalone as almost a must for anything above stock manifold or bnr turbo, or anything that puts alot more flow into the rotary.
Also a bad tune can do alot worse than good if you don't know what your doing and is left to the experienced, as one run with a horrible tune can wreck the motor, run lean then move up is the best way. A EMS is something you don't want to be cheap about.
If you go standalone start thinking about getting a bigger fuel system and single turbo.
If you are planning to just do those mods plus a standalone for a long time, I would just use the cash to get a boost controller and a safc II, as a standalone isn't needed at all really for your current setup and want get your "bang for the buck" you are wanting out of it.
