Thanks Carl. As far as I know Microtech don't make a ECU that has all of the tunability that you have been told. I know they were working on a new ECU but I hadn't heard much about it. I thought that they just released the MTX8L recently which was the same as the old model but had the laptop interface.
I will be interested to see what you find out.

It all sounds a bit dodgy to me. There is no way that the MTX8 has the same tunable ranges as a MoTeC, it would have less than a quarter. It doesn't compare to the Haltech either, both of these computers are far superior to the Microtech in terms of mapping points & features. I have no idea why they would claim that it would out do a E6K.

I think they hit the nail on the head when they said that it's tunability is easier, but for a reputable tuning company this shouldn't be an issue. One of the main reasons it is easy to tune is because there are a lot less points that need mapping.

The only reason you should choose a Microtech over a Haltech is cost. If you can't afford to have a Haltech installed and tuned then a Microtech could be a good alternative. I have many friends who have a MT8 running their cars with no problems at all, so I am by no means against them, I just find it amazing that MVA can claim that the Microtech is superior to the E6K and on par with a MoTeC when it is just not true.

Here is a post that I copied from another forum but THE_Hitman. I am not sure whether you have heard of him but he is a well known reputable tuner.

Cheap ECU's equal cheap mapping. If you want to keep the bugs out you use a fly screen, not a fishnet. You want your engine running perfect you use a fine map not a course one.

I had a great demonstration to show two Swift Turbo owners a few weeks ago. One running a new Microtech MT-8, the other running a now old Haltech E6A (circa 1995). Both cars running identical turbo motors and injector sizes, with the general setup of the cars being very much the same. I have my UEGO AF Meter connected and I get a nice chance to show the difference.

MT8 car is idling on 11.2:1 , which is very rich. Click the handset a single point leaner and it drops to 14.9:1 and the car stumbles and runs rough. What options are there but to run it at 11.2:1 at idle. Rich and idling but not completely happy. Expect to foul plugs with extended idling time.

E6A car is next. Starts with 11.8:1 at idle. First step leaner, 11.9:1, next 12.1:1 , next 12.3:1 ...... etc.. etc....
The car purrs , and runs clean. MT8 man is surprised and gets to learn that there is a big difference between cheap ECU's and good ECU's.

I believe the people that swear by the cheaper systems have never seen what a good system can do to a car. I would also be wary of any workshops that insist that the cheaper ECU's are the best. Most of the time these ECU's are pushed because they are simple to get running with little computer knowledge required, they get the car out of the workshop quicker, and the return on making the sale is rather good. If they are willing to skimp on the ECU, what else in the engine build are the skimping on. Just something to think about....

Microtech

$2200 is pretty dear in my opinion,
they are $1300au with coils which is $650us at the moment, they take about 3 hours to wire up (i have one on my car) say at $50/hour thats up to $800us and they take about 4 hours to tune properly, so they are charging $1400 to tune them??? check the prices out again, it would work out a lot cheaper sourcing one from here and installing it your self and then getting them to tune it, they come with a base map that is good enough to make the same power as the standard computer and drive as smooth as the standard computer and very very easy to install, i fitted one to a nissan 200sx sr20 turbo and it took about 6 hours and that was piggy backing it and tracing wires all around the car.

BTW you dont need 4msd's with the microtech, the mtx8 uses its own igniters and fires 4x bosch hec705 coils, all the quick street cars/ some race cars are just using the bosch coils and have no problems with them.
