How to Tune & Modify Engine Management Systems

How to Tune & Modify Engine Management Systems

ISBN:0-7603-1582-5

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...glance&s=books

I ordered this last week, and I was pretty sure I understood what was going on under the hood, with maybe some holes in exactly what each sensors "normal" reading was... but I understood AFR, Ignition Timing, and Intake Temp, as well as EGT.

But this book goes into Volumetric Efficiencies, Torque, Fuel Burn Rates, Octane, and has nuggets of wisdom on Turbo Charged engines, and even mentions Rx-7 engines. (Although not in the same context as reliable and bulletproof)

One of the biggest things that I have come away with so far, is that with a turbo charged rotary, there is no margin for error, and since tuning one requires, one or the other, experience, or a deep wallet, for (Engines, Dynos, and Metering equipment). Of which I have neither. But what it does do, is makes you much more educated as to what goes into the tuning process.

And in the case of Jesuskookies I would feel a lot better about adding or removing fuel to an already tuned setup, that just needs adjustment for certain mods... Not safe by any means, and fully knowing that I'm screwing up the efficiency of the tune, by doing so, but also correcting a potentially hazardous situation for the engine, to an inefficient one.

This book is well illustrated with color pictures, well laid out, and takes you step by step through each topic. I've skipped some subjects such as "EMS Engine Swapping" since that is not my intent. And I didn't seem to have missed much. This is a great read, especially for people wanting to start to shop for an EMS, since it clearly laid out piggyback, vs. standalone, and has a descent review of features of all the common EMS unit out there, incl. Haltech, Motech, AEM, Power FC... etc... I don't remember Microtech being mentioned, but I already purchased an EMS, so there was little to be gained by looking carefully at this section.

such a poor investment...
its just a expensive pretty cover, picture book talks about simple basic theories... something you get from every engine car books.

eventhough it mentioned about rotary, but it has nothing to do about tuning or engine characteristic of rotary engine.

the information it gives, some if applied to rotary, will destroy the engine in seconds.

I think its a waste of money... for something you can just read online.

The trouble is a lot of people ask questions on this forum that are easily answered and explained by doing a little reading, and the book does a good job explaining what each EMS is capable of, and goes over the basic of tuning.

I do agree that it's not a "Adjust this" "Take that value multiply by magic rotary multiplier" and PRESTO you have a Tune... but then again why would people shell out 100's of $ for a tuner if it were that easy....

You can just find the info on each EMS on their own site. You will find more than what that book tells you. The book only provide you with this little table, quite useless.

This book never mentioned the "ADJUST THIS...blah blah" but it does not even mention the usefull insights, or tuning strategies. It barely brushes on each subject, and moves on.

Its a great book for beginners, however, anyone with some basic knowledge about how an internal combustion engine works, will find most sections of this book quite boring.

Well perhaps then please feel free to reccomend a more advanced book, to me tuning seems to be a black art passed from sensai to student, and I'm (Sans Sensai) and therefore looking for some good reading material to be able to better comprehend what's going on. I for one am not disapointed with the book, and think it would answer a lot of questions for people new to engine management systems...
