How to find the proper timing on a rotory?

First let me say i've done a search and not found anything to help me with this question. So here goes.

I've been trying to learn the principles of tuning an FI engine by searching the web, forums, and reading books, and everything I've found so far says to find the proper timing by adjusting till you hear detonation, than back off a little. Now with a rotary the last thing you want to do is induce detonation, so how the hell do you find the proper timing?

Maybe its really simple and i'm just blind, but can someone please help me out here? Thanks.

Run a knock monitor?
MSD makes a cheap one.
J&S make a more expensive one.

RETed... Where do you mount a knock monitor on a rotary to get ideal readings? On the side of the rotor housing?

Ideally closest to the spark plugs as possible.&nbsp I believe all Kouki FC and FD rotor housings have the 10mm x 1.0 bung you can use.&nbsp The problem is that you'll be monitoring only one rotor, unless you get two monitors or somehow multiplex two sensors into one display.&nbsp The Zenki FC threads the stock knock sensor into the intermediate housing, right next to the oil fill neck.&nbsp This "covers" both rotors, but it's fair bit away from the "ideal" around the spark plugs area.
