Basic Tuning Concepts & Theory

I'm looking for some basic info on tuning. Mostly the theory behind tuning itself.

Some of my questions are:
- how do we figure the AFR for any given engine-load & RPM?
- how does timing come into play?

I do understand the idea of timing and why proper AFR is needed but...

- how is it we can figure the proper timing-degree & AFR?
- what theory/idea/formula do we apply when tuning the AFR for WOT & 7k RPMS?
how would the tuner know that 12:1 isn't too rich or lean at that load & rpm?

seems to me that we'd monitor the exhaust temp (doesn't running rich colder Vs. running leaner?). seems i really need to be straighten out here;

Also read the manual for the standalone EMS that you own or are thinking about buying. Most EMS manuals can be downloaded for free at the manufacturer's website.
