Motorcycle helmets are DOT only. You're going to want a helmet that has SNELL 05 or SNELL 2010 certification, as many venues require helmets that meet SA2005 at minimum.
http://www.soloracer.com/pyrotectopen.html thats the helmet I run(although older so only SA2005). You may wish for a full face but I personally prefer open.

i have an sa 2005 pyrex pro i think
i have about 20 helmets so its hard to remember what the names of each are...
some motorcycle helmets are ok to use at some events and they can still be snell rated; they are rated SM instead of SA. so usually an SM2005 is equivalent to an SA2000.

AZ follows NASA rules mostly.
We require M05+ With Snell rating
and Motorcycle helmets CAN have Snell ratings. Maybe you're thinking of dirtbike helmets?
I recommend going to the motorcycle dealer/shops near you and looking for their clearance sections.
Ridenow is in AZ and they had a section where they were trying to get rid of M05 helmets since the m2010 ones came out.
I got my helmet for $60

The Snell tag is usually inside the helmet under the padding to one side. Lift them up and look for it before buying.

I have a cheap *** Zamp FSA-2 SA2005 helmet. It fits like garbage...dont get one. I bought it because I was salty that Club Loose wouldn't let me Tech with my $750 Arai anymore.... they put the SA2005 requirement in effect over the Snell05 on helmets.... Its shitty because I know that I'd be safer in my Snell2005 Arai over that $170 5 gallon bucket filled with fire retardant foam...
I gotta say though, I will be getting a nicer SA helmet soon... It really is so much nicer having a dome piece that breathes and is light weight. Also when you get into higher end helmets like Arai, Suomy and **** like that..the craftsmanship and fit/feel is sooo much nicer. I can wear my Arai all day as if its not there...and I cant wait to get that itchy piece of **** Zamp off my head after a run
my Arai

^Well at least I know what to expect from that Zamp helmet I just bought lol... also for clubloose.
Can't beat the price, and its SA2010 so it wont expire for a while. Seemd like a good place to start.
I couldn't see myself laying out $500+ on my first helmet. For parking lot events. With no roll cage to smack my dome on.

just get a cheap one for under $100. fits the bill and from your 'beginner' point of view, it should serve you well in parking lot type events. many of the events i have attended never checked the certification thing. especially parking lot beginner drift practice sessions. no one cares as long as its a helmet.
other than that.
Just ask yourself how much your head is worth and start from there

Wrong wheel drive **D
Some events I have been to allow you to use your own or will lend you one... First autocross I did was in a borrowed helmet, no clue what brand, it was full face and he had already dumped his bike with it a few times, had no visor and the mouth cover was cracked the whole way down...
