Evan's LS6 FC3S Build

OK so here it goes. I know this one will attract every hater possible.

I love rotaries. I love RX7s. I've been building and driving rotary RX7s for 8 years.

In April I started thinking I wanted to try something else for a little. I was planning on selling my FC for money down on a 350z. The car still had the FR layout that I was looking for, It was a proven drifting and grip chassis, has a large aftermarket, and wasn't a 240sx.

Then the funniest thing happened, after a little collision at the track, my radiator fan on the V-mount broke and the car overheated in about 12 seconds. I quickly shut it down and it was taken off track. I fixed the fan as best as I could, it wasn't pulling the proper CFM but it was pulling enough, and I drove the car 40 miles home from the event. I drove the car to places to get alignments done, changed the water, changed the oil, it was holding Idle, Temps and Pressures just fine. Nothing unusual. I thought I had slipped by my little overheating accident unscathed. I signed up for the next drift event which was East Coast Bash and brought the car down for 2 full days of drifting. I towed the car down instead of driving it because I figured I would crash. Needless to say the car was running about 10 degrees hotter than usual which I attributed to the outside temps being so damn hot. I had 3 ok runs on the back course at Englishtown and on lucky run number 4 the motor blew. It was a coolant seal, weakened by the overheating incident, and then finally giving way at about 6500 RPM.

I was pretty fuckin bummed to say the least. That motor only had 9000 mi on it. I spent the rest of the day at Englishtown watching some drifting and talking to people. After a few conversations with a few different people I had a thought: I wanted to build a piston car and now I have a roller without a working motor... Might as well still do a piston build.

"A man cannot understand the perfection and imperfections of his chosen art if he cannot see the value in other arts."-Musashi

This then lead to choice of motor. I basically went for a common (and commonly hated) swap of a GM LSX motor. I did a little searching and ended up finding an F-Body car for sale with an LS6 already fitted and purchased it.

My build motto is going to be "Aggressive Japanese Exterior, Powerful American Interior"

I have begun ordering and receiving parts for the swap. I have been getting a ton of help and advice, which I really appreciate, from Andrew at D-Up Drifting. If you've never seen Andrew's car, I feel bad for you.

And because of the tight fit of an LS6 in an FC with big headers I ordered a ton of heat protection from summit. The tubes protect each spark plug wire from the big headers

more updates soon

vosko 07-19-11 08:05 PM

that was fast

RXILVER7 07-19-11 08:18 PM

I'm shooting to have this motor in and the car ready to rumble by freedom moves. So I'm moving as fast as I can. Everyone knows how annoying it is when you're just waiting for parts to arrive.

vosko 07-19-11 08:37 PM

so that car you bought has a z06 engine in it ? you gonna dyno it before you take it out ?

RXILVER7 07-19-11 09:59 PM

It's not exactly a Z06 motor. Its an LS6 but it's a GM Crate motor. What I mean is that it was never taken out of another car. It was built from the ground up. It was already dynoed a little while ago. It has a very modest tune for street driving and extremely restrictive 1 1/2" headers with catalytic converters and mufflers. It dynoed at 428rwhp.

driftfcbuckey 07-19-11 10:06 PM

what happened to your other build?

RXILVER7 07-19-11 10:14 PM

^^ if you're referring to the FD, it's still in my garage and still a 2 rotor. It's always going to stay that way. The FC is the car I'm currently drifting so I'm focusing all my time and money on it. I've begun to gear the FD more towards time attack and road racing, but it will basically be an all around performer when finished. The FD needs about 2 months and $4-6000 thrown at it to be complete. I'm hoping for next summer on that one. I got Redline time attack to approve the FD for street tire level if I throw some things back in it like interior and a catalytic converter.

slidinsilly 07-19-11 11:41 PM

i hope i get to see this thing at freedom moves. looking into a piston build myself. i hope to b done by then.

vosko 07-20-11 08:14 AM

i drove alcolades LQ S14 and those have like 300rhwp ? that thing is gonna be nuts with over 400 hp/tq on tap. no matter what gear i was in, burnout time

crazy $6k engine stock

RXILVER7 07-20-11 08:44 AM

Yeah it's going to have plenty of power on tap. With the larger headers and more free flowing exhaust I'm going to use it should add some HP. I'm looking to keep it pretty conservative though as I want it to be reliable and don't need 500hp or something. I'd be fine with much less.

RotaSpinna69 07-20-11 09:22 AM

It's a love/hate relationship haha. I have an FD too and it will always stay Wankel. But, as soon as my FC went boom, I bought an LS :)

vosko 07-20-11 09:47 AM

they also fit ten times better in FC's. its retarded to put one in a FD

RXILVER7 07-20-11 10:26 AM

Vosko's right. The FC is much more agreeable to LS swaps and 20b swaps as well.

RXILVER7 07-21-11 01:12 PM

Wiring....I'll kill you. My basic plan is to have one 4 wire engine harness for the LS6, one harness for Headlights, turn signals, wipers, fans, and one harness for the gauges.

Speaking of which does anyone know where I can buy Cabon fiber to make dash panels? I'm not even sure what thickness I should use. I kinda want to avoid using metal do to the fact it will be close to wiring and don't want anything to conduct.

yo i didnt even realize this was u. i met u at a couple cl events, i got the blue fc.

glad to c u found a new powerplant. hopefully this one will last u moar then two runs haha

RXILVER7 07-21-11 01:30 PM

HEY!!!! It was 4 runs haha. Petty only got 2 runs out of his 13b corolla before it blew.

TweakGames 07-21-11 01:48 PM

:nod::nod::nod::lol:

Right now I'm trying to learn as much as possible about the LS and LS FC car setup.
Feel free to PM me with any questions you may have. Chill out on the wiring, it's actually really simple. I thinned my engine harness after looking up a few diagrams and it really helped. My harness was automatic so it had TONS of retarded wires to remove.

After I got the engine it only took me 4 weekends of working on it to get it race ready. Raced on the 5th weekend and have not missed one yet! :D

I assume you have pez mounts, those really help simplify things. :icon_tup:

Rickyyp 07-21-11 05:18 PM

EVANN! good luck with your build bro very much looking forward to seeing you at freedom moves!

K!NCH 07-21-11 06:01 PM

Bummed to see the rotary go, but I'm glad you're sticking with drifting. I'm sure you'll do the build it right and have a killer car.

vosko 07-21-11 06:24 PM

you got allot more than 4 runs with that setup. mine is going strong but i still have to fix some issues

RXILVER7 07-21-11 08:16 PM

Yeah I had about 1.2 million runs on that motor, but only 4 at ECB the first event after it overheated. Life lesson: Even when you thought you creeped by an overheat....... you didn't.

RXILVER7 07-21-11 08:35 PM

Well I made Myself a Gauge cluster.

http://evanfitch.com/images/SAM_0389.JPG

and I know it's not perfect so I don't need any strict scrutineering.

infinite7z 07-21-11 09:22 PM

I like the gauge cluster! it looks good. and im now subscribed to your build =)

RotaSpinna69 07-22-11 08:33 AM

Looks good, but race cars don't need speedometers :)

RXILVER7 07-22-11 09:00 AM

yeah i know. The car is street registered and I'm going to be driving it on the street at least a little so I wanted a speedometer.

RXILVER7 08-10-11 10:47 AM

Still waiting on parts. Mainly motor mounts and wiring components. Once those two things arrive I can really start cookin. In the mean time I've been messin with other things.

I got my origin universal wing in the mail yesterday. I know everyone thinks that wing is huge, but you have no idea. It's fuckin incredibly huge. It's a universal wing and the stays it comes with are for a rear deck, which all the fc guys know, wont fit on my car. So I made a template and did a little fiberglassing to one of them. I still need to finish sand and paint it, but I think it will work well.

I was going to have metal brackets on each side like this.
(excuse the garbage fast photoshopping)

http://evanfitch.com/images/fiber4.jpg

Is that what you mean?

driftfcbuckey 08-10-11 04:13 PM

that is brilliant. lol you're going to be bitter when it does disintegrate into a million pieces because the glass will not hold to the metal as much as you're hoping it will. you would be further off making a template to wrap around (like you did with the fiberglass) but cut out whatever metal the stands are. if theyre aluminum obviously you'll need to cut aluminum templates.

then have someone tig it up and if youre super anal you can flap disc the welds down so its smooth looking.

how much was it? i will buy it off you if you want to sell it.

RXILVER7 08-10-11 04:31 PM

The wing stays from origin are made of fiberglass. I just added a little extra on the bottom. I have thought about going the full aluminum route, but I was hoping this would work. I think even if my little piece on bottom broke it still wouldn't fly off and brake just sag till I unbolt it.

damn theyre fiberglass originally? what a brain fart that is....
you would think they would atleast make them out of aluminum like Dmax...

RXILVER7 08-10-11 08:05 PM

So here is my mounting idea. I will put a total of 4 bolts through the wing and 8 through the body per side when mounted.

How much was the wing? Around $800 shipped I think. I'm interested in using it not selling it. I'll see if I can somehow scan in my sweet pizza box stay template if I can.

lamar- 08-11-11 12:14 PM

I like the way you got the wing mount going, cant wait to see how it all turns out..

RXILVER7 08-11-11 05:54 PM

You bastards. I took your advice and I've begun making aluminum stays. Same template, just different material.

http://evanfitch.com/images/alum3.jpg

This is only the rough cut. I need to grind, sand, and paint them also,

86rx786 08-12-11 10:09 AM

Hey do you know what kind of spoiler was on there before your custom one? I have those same 4 holes in the back of my car from a spoiler and I am wondering what kind/brand it is.

RXILVER7 08-12-11 10:16 AM

I'm not sure if those holes are used for more than one, but the one mine had was the mazda factory lip spoiler. Like the car in the picture.

https://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f...ortspoiler.jpg

Here is mine when it was on.

http://evanfitch.com/images/fcback.jpg

86rx786 08-12-11 06:00 PM

Ok, I'm pretty sure that's the kind of spoiler since the holes in the back of your car are identical to mine. Thanks!

slowestfc3s 08-16-11 11:46 AM

wow i bet this thing is a monster to drive. great car!

Zenki FC3S 08-17-11 06:15 AM

Forrest gave me the carbon origin spoiler of the s14 he wrecked....

I gave it away to a homie like a dumbass

fuuu you are a dumbass. weren't you riding with him when he piled it?

Zenki FC3S 08-17-11 04:30 PM

Yea that was prolly the coolest thing ever! Soooooooo fast in a small ass spot... Wasnt wearing a harness either, but thats what buckets and a formula d cage is for

I gave it to the homie cuz he has a carbon guy. He went outta business and never repaired it. It dissappeared

Daviticus 08-17-11 10:36 PM

Looks good. This build is causing me to consider a piston swap in the vert ...

I actually want to find one of those thumbnail spoilers and attach it to my vert, I think it'd be different in a sublet, positive way.

Buckey, you're the shit bro. Also, on the topic, I have three OEM deck wings, two S4 and an S5. If you're interested haha.

Enough derailing, let's not jank up homie's thread.

Skidtron 08-19-11 05:16 AM

Speaking of spoiler where are people getting the ones that have the stays all the way out past the hatch on both sides? I've see a few maybe they are modified or something. They mount flat along where the factory spoiler mounts.

RXILVER7 08-19-11 08:04 AM

you're probably talking about garage BB.

MattRose 08-19-11 12:22 PM

The only thing that's kinda wack is that the wing is "carbon style" when its really FRP. Might aswell just come in a clean gloss black.

RXILVER7 08-19-11 12:44 PM

Well this one is real carbon if that makes your feel better
