Let's take a poll.. Do you think its fair those who drove less than you to DGRR to NOT pay for registration or you think its fair that they don't??
Please post your response as some locals and some who thinks they are entitled to attend events for free. I mean, I paid $10 to attend IA Spring in Atlanta, GA and that was just a big parking lot. I guess I'm just stupid that I paid for IA... or any other car event that I attended and paid..
Please post because next year, I need ALL your help to stop these freeloaders, moochers, etc. from coming to the event, taking parking spaces, buying raffles tickets, etc.

have to say this wasn't the only "entitled" FD owner that I bumped into or overheard at the event,,, just saying,,,
most of you were cool but the bigger the event gets the larger the ******* ratio will increase, kinda unavoidable.
If you're not going to come and enjoy others company and cars then don't come out, if your local you can go to the dragon anytime you'd like, no reason to spoil it for the rest of us, if your logic is what is stated in the OP.
fair is fair, gotta pay to play.

lol, there we go, so here's the plan, we hire the state troopers for guard duty at the parking lots and lodges and that will pull them off 129. Two birds with one stone, we are paying the fees that they are racking up with tickets with the guard fees up front and no one gets a ticket on the road, problem solved...

I'm with Ian. I drove a 1976 Rx-4 from Midwestern Ontario 2 years ago (which is like 3 hours north yet from Ian). Imagine 16 hours one way driving in 4th gear at 4K RPM with 3" open exhaust! Also paid my fees. It takes a lot of work and money just to organize and run an event like this. People need to open their eyes and realize that.

Thank you all for understanding. And I also want to say, without help of many volunteers this event could not be made. And definitely without the support from you guys who said positive stuff, i would of canned this event long time ago.
SO, thank you all for your kind words.. Which is usually my way to get an OK from my wife.. Who's the real boss of DGRR happening every year

^ I second that. My wife indulges my rotary addiction and we know with the 3 rotor complexities, it's no small sacrifice.
Phil, I'd say take the issues for what they are, the comments of a few. If you feel there is something to be learned and improved by it, then use it to move on. If not, don't sweat it as the event is a great one.
Enjoy your weekend.

Thanks for understanding guys. Next year I would need all your help to identify those who comes into NVNC property without registering. Its combination of liability and disrespect of those who paid the registration. Those who feel and disagree with this, than they should either stay away from the event at NVNC and just be on the public road during the event. All this would be very closely stated during next year's DGRR registration.

Is there a decal that the attendees do or can place in their windshield before arrival? If so, then I assume you are renting this entire NVNC facility? If you are, then why can't you just station a booth/bar stool at the parking lot entrance to deny access to anyone without the registration sticker - or to sell one if needed? Perhaps a combination decal and collector companion stub?
And to Answer your question, I don't see how distance enters into the equation in any way. I love the Phillies, but if I travel from SC to see a game, they are not going to give me any kind of discount to the park or to parking because I traveled farther than anyone else.

Phil,
I don't recall seeing any restrictions on event attendance based on registration. I was under the impression that registration got me a lodging code and discount at Nantahala Village, a t-shirt, goody bag, one raffle ticket, and a car show entry form. I thought that anybody could drive their car to the event just to meet everybody.
Since I have not worked as a volunteer, I am not really sure what goes into the event, but I think it would be nice to allow for a certain amount of attendance for those who are not as financially well-off. Given that there is a problem with parking, maybe you could include a parking pass along with the car show entry form, and the unregistered visitors would have to park in an overflow lot?
If somebody wants to buy raffle tickets, then I would hardly call that mooching. If there is some reason that you don't want unregistered people attending the banquet, then maybe you could require a name tag for attendance? However, now that there is no longer food at the banquet, I don't see what is wrong with having visitors as long as there is seating and space available. Does Nantahala charge you for the use of the banquet area?

Name tag. But this coming year we will try to also implement wrist band for the 2 days.
We are trying to do with min. volunteers and staff. Next year we are also going to implement some sort of sticker/decal to identify registered cars.
I understand your point. But let me state this to you. Say you drove 500 miles to Phillies game and than someone you knew who lives in Philly was able to get sneak in the game for free because the ballpark people weren't doing their job. If you drove say 8+ hours one way, spent 2-300 on gas and that happens to you, I think you might feel kind of unfair. I think that's the situation I'm hearing from some and the reason I'm trying to stop this next year.
I have given free registration in the past to those whom have contacted me and stating $30-35 registration fee would really help. But also trying to make sure they are genuine and not to take advantage is a gamble itself.
As you know, parking is tough at NVNC, also allowing non registered car to take potentially a spot of registered member would be unfair. Hence we are working for next year to eliminate that issue. We are also going to make sure registration is completed by Friday night.
Raffle prizes should be for those registered and not for anyone who wanted to attend the banquet and win. This year, I had NVNC staff asking if they can purchase raffle tickets. I had to say no. Mainly because some, maybe not you, feels that it would be unfair for someone who's not a rotary person, nor registered to win prizes that are purchased and donated by vendors. Another example of this being unfair (potentially by some) is if they decided to not register and purchase $40 worth of tickets and winning big dollar prizes such as Exedy Clutch and what not. I believe best to resolve this is to just ONLY allow those who registered and not anyone who decided to just show up, buy limited event shirts, buy raffle tickets, and then with their luck, not get caught and win multiple high dollar prizes. That scenario could be possible and me and several others that I've talked to also felt it would be unfair. Especially this year, when event shirts were VERY VERY limited.

EvilAviator,
Phil has said multiple times on multiple sites that he is willing to work with people and even waive the fee if its a financial dealbreaker for a person. However, the main person griping here drives a decently modded FD. If he truly cannot afford 30 dollars, he may need to rethink his priorities or find a different hobby.

Next time I would post a list of which events are open and which are closed to those who don't pay, and then have signs saying "This Event Open to Paid Attendees Only" and ask them to display their proof of payment.
As for a wristband... I hate them. They are only comfortable for a few hours max. Also they would have to be made of some water-proof material to survive the shower or rain.
