Signature Rule...
How many of you 3rd gen guys have a signature with pic and picture thats bigger than 20kb??
Well, I think its time that the forum rule needs to be changed as 20k these days is nothing for most of us on broadband or even on wireless cards thru cell companies.
I been sited twice for my signature thats only 48kb.
Anyhow, I just wanted to vent and see how many think the forum rules should be changed... I'll change my sig in next day or two.. even though its linked to another server.. LOL!
Just venting..

Send me the sig and I'll custom make it for you to fit.
check mine ~ It's a two piece.

Another way of looking at this equation is that an F1 would need "only" 740 hp to reach the Bugatti's top speed.

And i know quite a few rotary guys.. and I say that's about 1% of the people.. LOL!

Since it is still January, and apologies to Dr. King...
I have a dream of a forum where members will not be judged by the design of their signature, but by the content of their posts.

I'd just as soon the limits stay as is. I get tired of large sigs that I have to scroll through as I look through a thread. There isn't any reason for large sig lines. Yours, for example, once I've seen it, I don't need to see it again. Not that it isn't nice you understand, but still...

The 20k size has been put in place for several reasons and there is little chance of it changing anytime soon.
Mentioned previously was the issue of the occasional dialup user, yes we still consider those poor souls who are stuck with 90s technology.
Other reasons mentioned such as bandwidth are not so much a concern for the forum as much they are for the users. I agree that there isn't much issue with a larger file here or there, that's why attachments are allowed in nearly every section of the forum.
The reality is that some of you guys post 3 to 5 or even 10 times per page. If you have a 50k sig and so does everyone else it means that a forum page might have easily over a megabyte of signature data... broadband or not, that's a waste or time and space.
In this technological age of high speed connections and powerful desktops it is just as reasonable that YOU guys achieve the required file size limit by using the available technology out there. There are numerous picture applications out there that can properly resize an image file. Heck, even MS Paint can make a decently sized JPG nowadays.
If there is an image that you must have in your signature that you can't get within the 20kb file size, the displayed size of the picture is most likely excessive anyhow.

Thanks Dan! for the 20k pic.
Killjoy, I understand what you are saying.. But I thought most computers these days once you have a picture loaded once, its saved on your cache?
Also, I'm a mac guy and for some reason, I just can't get the file small enough with CS3 that I'm using. Maybe its something to do with PC? I don't know. Either way, I guess I'm upto regulation

If the image has solid colors, use GIF. If it's a photo of any kind, use JPG.
You may be aware of these things, but that's what's worked best for me.

For some reason CS3 med. compression in jpeg under 40K or so on the image aboved looked like ***.. hence it was the lowest I could go without being un-readable.. I don't know what Dan used but he keep the look pretty much the same but half the size..
Maybe I need to use something else to compress Jpeg? I'll also try GIF next time I compress it.
thanks dave!

what about the text + HTML markup? Can you increase the limits of that or does it still fall under the same guidelines as the images?
It can't be more of a waste of time and space compared to the daily, HELL, HOURLY reposts, right?

# Your signature can not be longer than 500 characters including BBCode markup.
# Your signature contains too many lines and must be shortened. You may only have up to 8 line(s)

Phil,
In a nutshell, jpg compresses best when there is graduations in color. Photos of course are graduated color everywhere. You'll get the best quality/kB.
GIF compresses best when the image has solid colors. Your logo signature would work well as GIF, especially if you took the original and tried a save-as. (The fact that it's jpg right now means it's got artificial color graduations). GIFs leave perfectly sharp edges, which makes lettering easy to read. Start with the GIF 32 options and if that ruins the colors then try GIF 64 and GIF 128.
In CS3 use the File->Save for Web and Devices... command. Try GIF, try JPG, you'll see a preview and file size. Always use the original, crop it to size, and use that to make the save for web. If you've used Save for Web to create a file, avoid using Save for Web on it again. Definitely don't go from GIF to JPG or vice-versa and expect the best results.

If people were a little more considerate with how often they post their sigs, maybe larger sigs would be allowed. Instead people post their sig in every single post no matter how many times they post in a thread. This wouldn't be a problem with small text sigs. IMO 99% of the pics in people's threads are just a waste of space, so why would I want to see it more than once in a thread? Why would I want to see your list of cars more than once either? Why not put this info into your profile instead, so people who are impressed by such things can find it and it doesn't clutter up threads.
TeamFC3S will only show a person's sig once per thread. I think this is an excellent feature that is long overdue on this forum.

But big signatures??? What is the point? Do you really need more than 6 lines of text and image for a signature? And if so... Why?
