Where should I buy a helmet and what helmet should I get?
Title says it all, I'm located in Toronto me I want a helmet for track days this coming season. Is there a place near by where I can try on a bunch of different helmets to see which one I like? Or is there a particular one I should get online ?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Definitely cheaper online, get a Snell SA2010 Rated helmet, they are designed for auto racing and provide extreme impact resistance and have higher fire protection. Bell, Pyrotect, Simpson etc. etc.
This is where I got my last one:

I got a G-Force CFG carbon fiber helmet from Gateway Racing at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park for $370. It's probably overkill if you really want to save money, but it is lightweight and comfortable. I plan to get a lot of use out of it in the next few years.
The high-end helmets from some of the other brands are way more expensive, based on my online research.

Good price. I am still using my old Shoei motorcycle helmet. Pretty old now. Would love to pick up a new carbon fibre one.

And if you are just doing lapping days for now check with the organizing club as to what is required. Often times you can get away with an out of date or motorcycle rated helmet for now and invest the difference in your car or some driver coaching.
Ok yeah I guess when it comes to my safety I shouldn't really take any chances. So where should I go in the GTA to check out helmets? Budds BMW was recommended above, any other places I should be checking out?
Three suggestions:
JRP (Mississauga) - http://www.jrponline.com
CSC Racing (Newmarket) - http://www.cscracing.com
Sportscar Boutique (Thornhill) - SportsCarBoutique - Style, Performance, Safety - SportsCarBoutique

Also try on a variety of sizes from a variety of manufacturers.
Sizes run differently of course, but, shell shapes also run differently for different shaped heads as well. Round, oval etc.
Some people will fit comfortably in some brands and not in others.

I agree with trying on various sizes and types of helmets first. Sports Car Boutique in Thornhill has a lot and so does CSC. I would also attend the Canadian Motorsports Expo and see what vendors show up. You can usually cut a great deal on a helmet there.
Just a word of advice, get a full face. The vision loss is minimal, but the extra safety of having a full visor really helps in that one in a million chance of having a stone thats kicked off another car come in through your open side window and ping you in the face or (I hope it doesn't happen) you lose it during a lapping day and bang a wall head on at about a 100 kmh. Your seat belt stretches and you smack your teeth against the steering wheel. It can and does happen with open face helmets. Get a full face and get used to it. Its also quieter in there.
