I wish i saw this thread sooner. I just got done driving around town looking for it. I've already got Vasaline for the water seals, but one of my rebuild videos says to use Hylomar for the dowel o-rings and to seal the legs. I suppose Vasaline would be fine for the dowel o-rings, yes?

But for the legs I don't want to use silicone for reasons that it sets, which can be a pain if you have to tear it back apart, or need to walk away for a few hours. I did find a product from permatex that is called "2 Form A Gasket Sealant. Non-Hardening Pliable Sealant" 2B. Would this work as a substatute?

NOOOOOOO!!!!!! Dont just use vasoline on the legs!!!

You need to put RTV sealant or something that does dry and seal or else you will have oil leaking out of there from you oil pan.

It shouldn't be a pain to tear apart if you build it right the first time

Vaseline is basically used to hold the o-rings and seals in place during assembly. It does not assist with sealing and disappears shortly after the engine has been fired up.

For the legs, you need to use RTV, aircraft sealant, etc.

I never said in my post that I was using vasaline on the legs. What I did say was that on my rebuild video (DIY 13b), they used hylomar on the legs. I have used silicone in past builds, but I'm not really a fan of it in case I need to walk away from the build at any time.

I was asking if the Non-Hardening Pliable Sealant would be an okay alternative to hylomar on the legs.

Found hylomar at Harbor Freight tools and it was the blue racing formula and was $5.00. Thought was good deal same tube you get from atkins and mazdatrix and they had 10+ tubes of it.

Yep, but $15 for less than a 1.2-oz!

Also, my understanding is that the new Permatex is NOT the non-solvent version like Permatex HPF. . .
