Where to Buy Permatex Hylomar?

Where can one purchase Permatex Hylomar HPF?

I have called every autoparts store in the city and no one has even heard of it.

Thanks.

23Racer 04-16-07 02:18 PM

It isn't available anymore, easily. Permatex doesn't make it anymore. Al should jump in here shortly with how he found it and how to get it now. I found 1 new tube at a Canadian Tire store on a peg wall. Thats it.

Eric

Snrub 04-16-07 03:43 PM

Oh, so that's why it's hard to get.

There is a british company called hylomar that seems to make sealant type products. Mazdatrix sells some other type of hylomar. Does anyone know where one might find another brand's version of the same stuff?

23Racer 04-16-07 03:56 PM

PM Al he researched the whole thing. If I recall correctly. Permatex had the licensing agreement for North America with the British Hylomar Company and produced and marketed the products that we bought. The new distributor is some small company in the boonies somewhere that will supply the product either mailorder or at a few supply points. The Mazdatrix Hylomar must be manufactured by Hylomar or left over Permatex production, so I would buy a few tubes to tide us over till some more channels are available.

I am going to call that dirt bag right now and get him to respond. He says that he a few tubes and they are only $100 a tube, LOL. Once a car dealer, always........

Well, I happen to have in posession 2 tubes of Hylomar. Eric is right that I told him I cornered the market after I found out who distributes it. The stupid part is NAPA didnt even know they carried it. I bought the last 5 tubes they showed in stock but that was about 3 weeks ago, I would assume that they have more now. I think the part number is 8100. When you ask NAPA about it, they will say they have never heard of it, just ask them to check part # 8100. It was about $18.00 or $20.00 a tube. Permatex balked on continuing to pay Hylomar for the rights to distribute it, thats why its no longer available at Canadian Tire. You can buy it from Racing Beat or Mazdatrix, but by the time you get it here it will have cost you a lot more.

that stuff is liek gold. we used to stock it at partsource but they got rid of it and it was relitively inexpensive. now one tube ir roughly $15. wish i had some.

other alternative would be crisco.
i gather your using it for coolant seals during a rebuild?

Nismo Convert86 04-16-07 09:19 PM

"Curil T" works as well, can't remember where to get it however.

R.P.M. 04-16-07 10:27 PM

Hey Jeff, if you want a tube of Hylomar, I'll give you one. It comes in the rebuild kits I order but I never use the stuff.

Loctite 518 Gasket Eliminator® Flange Sealant sounds like it would work. Atleast from the loctite catalog I have. Catalog says for use in sealing transmission and engine casings. You can buy all the loctite stuff from Clark Industrial Supplies in Brampton or any Brafasco (most likely will need to order it in for you). Those are the two main suppliers I use at work for loctite or the loctite rep if I need a lot of the stuff.

if your heart can't feel content unless you use hylomar go here:

There is a reason why Racing Beat uses Hylomar and only Hylomar when building engines.....................

dradon03 04-17-07 08:31 AM

And what is your mysterious wonder reason?

MrSector9 04-17-07 08:35 AM

loctite 515 is good, also try threebond 1107 or 1211, also you can use Yamabond which is available at any yamaha dealership.

I knwo alot of old school bike engine builders that used hylomar but now have switched due to the "shoratage"

1107 remainsflexible and only seals/semi hardons when pressure is applied much like the loctite 515.

somehow I don't think mazda uses hylomar in Japan. I wonder which they use at the factory. Threebond is a japanese company so maybe something from them

dradon03 04-17-07 09:49 AM

^

Don't they use Crisco and isn't it recommended in the FSM?

Vasciline works just as well, as long as it's not crappy off-brand junk. ;) I mean real Vasciline, that comes in the tub where the little curly black hairs collect...

this is what my loctite rep said:
Jason, the closest crosses we have to Hylomar are High Temperature Gasket
Selant # 30558 (7 oz tube) or Copper High Temperature Gasket Sealant Spray
(9 oz aerosol). These two (2) products offer the same kind of high
temperature resistance and similar thermal conductivity/heat dissipation as
Hylomar offers for applications like head gasket dressings. Please take a
moment to review our attached training opportunities link. Thank you
Jason.

I think you are looking at different uses for hylomar. We use the hylomar to coat all the seals between the housings etc. We use vaseline to coat the rotors etc for initial start up and turning the engine before its primed with oil.

R.P.M. 04-18-07 11:26 AM

The only thing the Hylomar is used for is to stick the coolant seals in their grooves. I've used just about everything but Hylomar. Vasoline, wheel bearing grease, glue ect... I've never had a problem.
When you pull apart a motor that was put together with hylomar, the coolant seal grooves are all packed up with this sticky mess and the old coolant seals usually rip and break. Making it a prick to clean out the grooves again.

Try putting a motor together with vasoline and tearing it apart 50,000kms later. The coolant seals just fall out in one piece and you hardly need to clean out the grooves.

01Racing 04-18-07 11:46 AM

Its funny you say that Joe, our experience has been totally different. We found that after 4 years in a second gen convertible, we pulled the engine apart and if we had wanted to could have re-used the seals when we used Hylomar. We took apart an engine someone else had build after about 6 months and the seals were smoked, it looked like they had used some other gasket sealer in the engine. I guess to each his own!

R.P.M. 04-18-07 11:56 AM

Weird lol. I guess your right though, to each his own. Whatever works!

I have said this in the past, vasciline is all i really use and have never had a problem.
the only place that hylomar really worked well was on housings that
were pitted.

Many opinions and just as many people who express them. I'm with all who gave Hylomar a thumbs up. All one has to do is Google Hylomar to find out how it was developed and for what purpose. When Permatex still had N.A. rights to this product I spoke to one of their engineers who mentioned that this is a unique sealer formulated specifically to function as a sealer, seal conditioner and with an incredible ability to resist high pressure in its perpetual gel state. I've been rebuilding rotary engines for nearly 20 years and Hylomar has permanent space in my tool box.
