im driving a 92 buick lesaber with a 3.8 v6 in it and im geting on average 29 miles to the gallon in the city and 35 miles to the gallon on the hiways. plus its like a cadalac it rides awsom and theres tones of room for a guy 6 foot 2

The B2600i is pretty sweet, pretty good mileage, reliable, and 4WD.

 

+1 for the Civic/ Corolla thing.

Right now I'm driving an '07 Camry SE V6. Beating the crap out of it on the highway with an extra 250lbs in the car, plus me, I got 7.5L/ 100 km lol. 4 passengers and all their luggage, from Toronto to New York took about 7L/100km.

It's a bit out of your price range, but I would still stick to a Corolla/ Civic if I just needed a beater.

 

92 sentra - slow as hell, 5.7L/100kms. that was nice. sold 2 weeks ago
98 corolla - faster than sentra, 6.2L/100kms it was nice.

hoping to find a cheap e36 bmw. my younger brother needs a car so he will get the old corolla.

 

Get yourself a B3000 like mine..........I know it's really a Ranger, but I love the fact that it doesn't say Ford on it....4X4 V6 MT....woohoo!

 

Not so eye appealing 1990 brown/tan GMC 1500 extended cab. 5.7L, A/C, burns tons of gas, and needs some work (valve seals, intake gasket), but I can knock all of that out easily in a weekend for minimal cash (i'm a technician).

Only has 155k on it, and is very reliable. No need for huge car payments here!

For the DD i drive a 90' Chevy Tracker 4x4. awesome on gas and only cost 35 bucks to fill from empty. definatly worth the money

 

I have a 2007 Cadillac CTS that I use as a DD but it is not the greatest in the snow. We also have a 2002 Grand Prix GTP but my wife usualy drives that.

 

'02 supercharged Frontier. Not cheap on gas but a helluva lot a fun!

2000 Honda Insight. Better on gas then any other production car, reliable, sporty and interesting to drive. Every bit as fun as the RX-7, but for different reasons.

 

Just curious, but realistically what kind of mileage do you get out of it on average?

 

As I recall, some time ago, he got 87MPG on the highway. No joke, I still have the pic saved somewhere.

 

Another cheap and dirty option is the 92-95 Civic VX. This was the most fuel efficient car of it's time. It has the 1.5L fuel efficient version of vtek. A whole 90hp but in a very light weight hatchback. It is the first production car to use a wideband O2 sensor. Parts are abundant and cheap (I bought a used tranny and installed it myself for $100). They are easy to fix (I did the tranny on my driveway in -8deg weather. They are extremely reliable, mine has 450K and I don't take care of it.

You can pick one up used for $2-4K and expect it last quite a few KM's if you can find one. They are not that common.

 

Those little 4WD Subaru things are suposed to be very reliable and good on gas. Although, I was told the transmissions arnt as reliable as they could be. I dont remember what its called, but it looks like a Mazda 323 or whatever.

 

For my year of Insight, the EPA ratings are 70 MPG city, 88 MPG highway. Normally I meet or beat those ratings fairly easily. However lately I've been corrupted by driving the RX-7 and have been heavy on the gas while driving the Insight in the city, so I'm only getting 65 MPG or so. On the highway I generally do over 80 MPG. London to Windsor and back is generally a low 80 MPG trip. Toronto and back is generally in the high 90s. Best ever was just over 109 MPG from London to Scarborough.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I remember when Honda had just brought out the Insight they were having a whole bunch of issues with it, customers complaining that they are only getting like 35-45mpg out of the thing. Glad to see that's resolved.
