What do you guys use for your DD?
I've just started working and have to commute ~130-170km a day. I can't keep doing this in my 7, especially since it will be store again soon.
Just curious what you guys drive? I might be able spend up to about $4k-$5k for a used one. Or with all these 0% financing options, I'm thinking about that.
Any recommendations?

I have a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. It's an awesome car, good on gas (26mpg+), comfortable on the highway, and it handles very well. It's a great all-around car and you can pick them up pretty cheap now.

Yeah, corrolla's are unreal. Get yourself an old AE86.
I had am 87 honda prelude with over 300,000kms on it a few years back. The guy I sold it too has over 380,000 on it. Its still going on original drivetrain (minus clutch).
06 Jeep Liberty here. I highly recommend to anyone their daily be a 4 wheel drive.

If it's a lot of highway miles, I'd have to give a nod to the GM W-Body.
I can get 6.8l/100 in an '02 Impala with the 3.4l in it on the highway. The W-body cars are the Impala, Lumina, Grand Prix, Regal, and the Cutlass. Not a very exciting car, but a great highway cruiser with lots of room and you're driving you're sofa.

I'm DD'ing a 92 Escort wagon at the moment.
Cheap on gas, old lady owned (immaculately cared for), and can fit engines in the back. Well, rotaries anyway
My g/f drives a corrola and I'll vouche for their reliability also. Its a 1994 with 415,XXX on the clock and still running mint. *knocks on wood*

I had a KIA sportage for awhile. Not very powerful, in fact, its lack of power almost got me killed a couple times (merge lane was far too short).
But the milage was great and the truck platform lended its talents for a great all around 4 wheel drive. Not to mention the front and rear factory LSD's. I could also fit 2 short blocks or 1 long block in the back.

Right now my DD is a 05 Mazda3. Never had any trouble with it and it gets good mileage.
Lease is up in 09. Mazda will be introducing their Mazdaspeed Miata by then. So I'll move into that when the time comes.

DD Golf
I keep beating a 90 VW Golf diesel around when I'm not driving an rx7. Performace sucks but at 50+ MPG can put up with no acceleration. The only thing is that for mainly a winter car it really doesn't like to start in the winter but once you get it going no problem.

06 Mazda6 Wagon - love it and the V6 gets good milage on the highway especially.
If you want AWD, good economy, great build quality and serious versatility then buy a used AWD Toyota Matrix. If you are just looking for a $4-$5K car as a runabout you can't beat a 4cyl Japanese car. Corollas last forever, sip gas and have a high resale. People rag on Civics, but they are fantasticly practical cars. If you want more luxury in your small car then an old Acura EL gives you that.

I drive a '95 mazda mx-3 thats dead cheap on gas, the 1,6l engine only drink 7-8l/100km. (no clue how many mpg that is, but I think its above 30) 105hp and 100 ft-lbs is awesome
at winter I have a '92 Subaru impreza sport wagon AWD, the best car you can use for a winter beater. I payed $700, and its still working great after a year with no repairs, and has 224 000kms. and the all wheel drive is awesome. Never get stuck in the snow. Very good fuel economy too with the 1.8l single cam engine. About 9 - 10l/100km

If you want to go cheaper, my 96 Civic hatch is for sale. $2500 certified and etested. It's rough but reliable and comes with winter rims and tires. Just passed etest and I will certify it for the sale.
