Vintage Mazda Unobtanium????

Hey Guys,

I originally posted this in the old school rotary & other forum but it may not see a lot of traffic so here goes.

For fun, I picked up this vintage Mazda gas cap from Thailand, apparently NOS and from a motorcycle. Now I'm pretty sure Mazda did not make any two wheel vehicles and especially motorcycles (I learned they did make a trike in the 1930s called the Mazda Go) but the construction is not really robust enough for automotive purposes. Maybe a Mazda scooter??? Or the micro cars like the Mazda R360????

Any ideas out there or actual sightings?

Thanks!

I hope you find out what it is. My local dealership has 5 or 6 of those still in their bags sitting in a box and isn't really sure what they are for. (Although, they had some RX-3 badges in the same box. I picked one of those up for fun.)

To me, with the tabs on the back, they look more like radiator caps than gas caps.

They wont make a very good rad cap since there is no spring and valve to relieve pressure.

Ok, it is a gas cap that fits everything from the R360 to Cosmo Sport to probably some of the RX-3,4,5 from the early 70s. And still available for $25:

If that local dealership still has those would you mind grabbing two for me? I'll pick it up from you at deals gap this year.

jim_chung: Nice researching to figure out what it was, and a nice find.

Buggy: I'll see what I can find out from him. Last time I was by was in in August (it's actually a dealership in a small town about 45 minutes away from me, but they are much better to deal with than the city dealerships) and he asked me to check out a box of old parts he had because he couldn't figure out anybody else who would know what to do with them. There was a bunch of random parts like those above, some filters and plugs as I recall, and a number of badges. (Multiple RX-3 badges, I picked up a pair for fun. Apparently one of two Mazdaspeed trunk badges left in the country, so we picked that up as a spare for the Protege.) I actually had somebody else send me a message about them as well, so let me give him a call early in the week, see what he still has, and what he wants for them. I don't mind bringing a few parts to DGRR.
